My SQL setup will be complete pretty soon

ALPINE CDA-9815
Lanzar OPTI 200.2
Lanzar OPTI 1000.1D (2 Strapped)
2.0 Farad Cap
1/0 AWG main power/ground
Crystal Mobilesound CSC60s 6 1/2"
2 - Elemental Designs 12A Subs
Slot Ported Enclosure tuned 29HZ
That setup should sound pretty good. I've been considering many of those components myself. I'm curious how you like what you have if you have any of it installed (especially the components and subs). But this is what I think I will be going with very soon:

Alpine CDA-7995
CDT CL-61 (for $150!)
1 Adire Audio Shiva
Not sure on the amps, but I think I might be able to pick up some PPI Art series for pretty cheap at a local shop [/QB]
Everything is installed, car awaiting a few minor tweaks on the rear end to stop water leak (Abra is incompetent at repairs!!) to just drop in the subs. I'm still trying to eliminate a ground loop noise as well before putting in the subs.

That was the HU I was going to go with... until I found the 9815 for the same price... hehe
More feature & better display. That is also a very good setup there.

PPI Art series amp are nice... but class a/b. You might also want to look into the Lanzar Opti 1000.1 (I have 2 of them strapped). Since you're only running 1 sub, you should get the Dual 4 vc & run the amp @ 2 ohms & turn gain down (it will still pump 700 wrms). You will have great clean amplified sound.

New Lanzar is crap. boink
Yes.... but only the ones being manufactured by Sound Around. The OPTI line is as good as it gets!! Nothing even comes close to it in the price range - period! Maybe US Acoustics....

Even with that nice of a setup, reaching that 160+db level can be difficult.
I can't even start to imagine how the JBL 1200/ Cerwin Vega (not stroker) combo can even get close to that mark.
Its all about moving air... Good power, good subs, and a finely tuned box thumb

You would be very suprised in how much bass those Vegas can put out with good power and a good box.

That's because nothing else in that price range is any good.

oh.. forgot to add this, i just installed all new speakers in my car.. 2 clarion 6 1/2's in the front and 2 jensen triaxial 6x8's in the back.. now i just need a new head unit so the speakers dont have that slight fuzz sound when its turned real loud and the song hits a spot with hardly any sound.. other than that, it sounds incredible. and anyone who says that those volfenhags are crap, u have to hear how they sound. they may not be as good as some of the higher end systems out there, but if u get a powerful amp(the lanzar amp i'm using is an old refurbished one) powering them and u get a decent box, it's plenty loud enough and sounds great. only problem i'm having now is the stock wiring in my car is so ******, it's causing a lot of distortion if i turn it up real loud.. well, loud enough to blow ur ear drums out.. but still, im thinking of running all new speaker wires(like 10 ga wire) so it's got plenty of thickness to handle all that current.. better that than run with the crappy 18 or whatever gauge that ford uses stock..

I've never heard the Shivas in person, but I like what I've read. The only thing I can audition around here is Pioneer and Power Acoustic and maybe some Alpine. I'm curious to hear your opinions on the Shivas.
Rob, I don't think it's the wires that are causing distortion in your system, and there's absolutely no need to run 10ga. speaker wire. And compared to the equipment that everyone else is talking about, Volfengags are not that great. Listen to a TRUE highend SQ system and you will know what I mean.

bass this.... bass that. Well i do like the sound of bass i also like to listen to music so i can do just that listen to that. I like to hear the words as well as the bass. Im not bashing anyone on that subject just stating the fact of which many people buy 500 watt rms subs and then dont have any midrange upgrades. Im going to be running two 10 inch eminece loudspeakers, the frequency range is 35-3000 hz accompained by some inifity kappa 6.5s. I will have the lower end frequencies while having quite a bit of midrange as well. Cant wait to get them in the mail!!

My system was completely upgraded. Highs, mids, mid bass, and lows. I had lots of bass, but I had the rest to match. I have played my subs by them selves before, bass by its self sounds like shit.

That's exactly my point. It is the best value for the money!!

speaker wire does not cause distortion, whatever anyone claims out of ignorance. There is quite a bit of current though, since watts equal volts multiplied by amps, and with only 12 or so volts, instead of 120 in home voltage, it takes 10 times as much current for a 12 volt system to have as many watts as a 120 volt system.
So, if you have a lot of power, I would get heavy enough wire to handle the current load.

Seeing how speakers are current driven devices, that is good. Speaker wire can hurt or help your sound. If not big enough, the power will not get through and your bass will just sound like a crack. Also, speaker wire that is not twisted causes capacitive reactance. Capacitive reactance blocks out low frequencies, just as small capacitors are used to block low frequencies in a crossover.

The bass is unlikely to sound like a crack with wires that are too small. What happens is that the resistance of the wire will reduce the power slightly, but probably not enough to really hear the difference. But they may heat up due to the current.
To be realistic rather than opinionated, consider that the resistance of, say 18 guage wire 20 feet long is .05 ohms. Say 14 guage wire is .012 ohms. The speaker is 4 ohms. The total resistance of the 18 guage set up is therefore 4.05 ohms, and the 14 guage set up is 4.012 ohms. So, the actual percentage difference is pretty slight, and so the actual decrease in power is a very very small percentage, just do the math.
Good luck hearing the difference, except subjectively. In a double blind test, I would say few could tell.
But lots of current will heat up wire in proportion to the wire guage, and even 10 guage wire will warm up slightly, and the higher number guage, the more it will heat up. In fact, home fuses are determined by how much current the wire will handle without heating up very much, certainly not enough to melt the conductor!
And to say speakers are "current driven" is a curious theory, likely picked up in casual conversation with people who use terms like that without really understanding electronics. Speakers are POWER driven, a combination of watts and volts. That is, a speaker will be just as loud with 1 amp and 10 volts as with 10 amps and 1 volt. The actual power is the same. But the speaker with the lower current will have a slightly better damping factor.
Check it out.
The main reason for all these low impedance systems is the effort to gain loudness via power with the limitations of 12 volts. Loudness at the expense of quality. If we had 120 volts in a car, we would have lots of powser available even at 8 ohms, but we don't. And its a LOT cheaper to build an amp to put out 1000 watts at i ohm than to build an amp which will put out 1000 watts at 8 ohms or even 4 ohms. The marketing of car equipment is on a power craze which encourages design quality compromises, sad to say.
And I am a power lover, actually. As I said, I have about 6000 total watts in my home system and I was the person who, with Bob Carver, built the world's first super amp, a huge tube amp, in 1966, from which design, Bob subsequently made a transistor version, the Phase LInear 700, which put out about 725 watts rms The largest previous stereo amp was the McIntosh 275, which was 150 watts rms. That Phase LInear started the movement to power. Heady days! So, now I have the Sunfire Signature 7 channel amp and an 18" Velodyne subwoofer. Sure would like to try that amp in a car with a good inverter!

Really, I have some tiny wires that just proved you wrong(again) I am not talkin about normal 18 AWG wire, I am talking about really thin wires(don't know the gauge). I completely understand how electronics work. I have been trained in that field and that is also my job.

No,I never did mean those very thin wires. I always meant at least 18 guage, so I could not have been wrong about something I did not assert. After all, they are not signal wires, they are speaker wires. And speakers are power devices, not merely current devices. Too bad cars don't yet use higher voltage batteries like the 40 or so volts they have been considering. That could help our car stereo systems, greatly increase efficiency, and also allow much thinner, lighter wire in the rest of the car, saving a lot of money and weight.

PS if you used such tiny wires that the sound "cracked", they must have also been close to melting and never designed for even close to speaker loads. 18 guage "normal" house lamp wire is about as small as I would use for speakers, and that would be for relatively short runs. The only reason I use 12 guage fine stranded wire is the amount of power I do have, of 800 watts rms per channel, and the relatively long runs from amplifiers to speakers. Also, I got a good deal on the wire from Monster Cable. A friend of mine knows Mr. Lee, the president of Monster Cable in California. My friend installs all of the stereos in Mr. Lees fleet of Ferraris. Needless to say, there is good profit in selling wire and cable when you convince people that characteristics that may apply in gigahertz designs also apply at audio frequencies!!

We were just using that wire to test to make sure everything was connected. We did not have enough of the wire we needed at the time. Actually, speakers are current driven divices... I will leave it at that, if you don't believe me... search the vast resources of the internet.

P.S. I really do not care who knows who.
