transmmission question

will the shop have to make any changes to it?

and how do i tell if my current tranny is rod shift or cable shift?

the one im lookin at is cable...if the one in my car now is rod how difficult will that be to change?

Yes the tranny will fit the only thing that they changed is the put a drain plug in. As for changing from rod to cable there is no problem as long as you have all of the parts off of the old tranny.

If the tranny you're looking at is cable, it ain't outta a '95. There's a bunch of ways to tell which shifter you have, easiest is just to look under the car. Two big rods coming from underneath where the top of the shifter is to tranny = rod shifter.

As mentioned, they are 100% interchangeable, but if you're putting a real '95 tranny (which means rod) into your '91 and yours is still cable, make sure they save all the parts from the old cable set up to transfer to the new tranny.

This is not correct. Any MTX-IV tranny that has a drain plug had it installed after the car left the assembly plant by either an owner, tranny rebuilder or such.

just an update

okay so i talked to my uncle today, and he would rather pay 4 grand to buy me a 99 Mercury Mystique w/ 75k miles on it from a dealership new brakes and struts are on it too :hail:

AND...i get to keep the SHO in all its l33tness...project car anyone? now will someone point me in the direction of a tranny and a turbo please... :dribble: :naughty:

Any relatively compentent mechanic would be able to swap the trannys no problem.

FWIW, the "Mercury Mistake" moniker is well-earned.

oh great...thats just what i need lol

but my uncles whole thing about getting this car is for reliable transportation...
