Well today I lost 4th gear in my ATX and will have to get a rebuild for the second time. The first time it was rebuilt it had 90k on it, and it just shit the bed again at 123k. I know ATX's are weak but they shouldn't they last longer than 30k? How does someone go about upgrading the transmission to the 94-95 design. What else should I have them do to make it stonger? I was thinking Shift kit and aftermarket fluid cooler. How much more money in addition to a rebuild would I be looking at for these upgrades? Thanks for your helf guys, this really sucks because I was planing on leaving for school tomorrow. frown

[I'll apologize for the length in advance... :D ]

The problem with any rebuilt tranny is that the majority of the old 'hard parts' (planetary gears, sprockets, clutch assemblies, drums, differential, etc.) are reused as long as they are within spec., including some acceptable wear.

While a rebuild includes all new 'soft parts' (gaskets, seals, rings, friction clutches, steels, etc.), those soft parts are likely to wear/fail faster with worn hard parts.

In addition, most shops will only replace known bad shift solenoids, servos, pistons, accumulator springs, etc. Some shops will specify all new on some or all of these parts, but expect to pay a premium. (One of these parts could in fact be causing your no OD problem.)

For your next rebuild, the TransGo kit comes highly recommended. The enhanced lubrication alone is worth the extra expense, and you will also gain faster, firmer shifts which will prolong the life of the tranny. It generally adds $100-$150 parts/labor to the cost of the rebuild.

I would definitely recommend adding an external ATX cooler. They are relatively cheap ($40-$80 depending on the make/model), and really help keep the fluid temp down. I'd also recommend starting out with a synthetic ATF (like Redline) right off the bat.

Presuming the shop who did your last rebuild followed all of the Ford TSB's and upgrades, you should have essentially the same tranny as a 94/95.

I'm sure someone will suggest you talk to Doug Lewis at FPS in Georgia about one of his rebuilt trannys. They are commonly referred to as 'Bullet-Proof'. Seeing that you're a student and probably don't care to spend $2200 on your tranny, I would at the very least recommend avoiding the chain tranny shops (specifically aamco), and try to find someone with some specific experience with the SHO tranny. (BTW, seeing that you're in ME, the only guy I'm familiar with that you could consider 'close' is in Milton, MA (just outside of Boston). He charges $1400+hard parts for a rebuild with the TransGo and including all labor to remove/reinstall the tranny. Email me if you want his contact info.)

If cheapest/fastest solution is what you need, you could always try to find a recycled tranny at a junkyard (as long as they will give you some type of warranty), which would probably run in the $500-$700 range, plus labor, etc.

To close, I'd recommend at the very least bringing the tranny to a local, respected shop with some Taurus experience (not necessarily SHO - the troubleshooting steps are the same) to give you a 'free' diagnostic. It might even be worth the 1-2 hours labor to bring it to a Ford dealer so they can run the full external tests. In either case, it might identify a problem that doesn't require a rebuild. Of course it could also confirm your suspiscions. One guarantee though: Bring it to AAMCO, and they'll tell you it needs to be rebuilt - even if it doesn't!

I agree with SHOooo. I would also look into getting one of the AX4S or AX4N trannies. The AX4S is better than the AXOD-E and the AX4N is better than the AX4S. The problem is that the AX4N was never offered in the Gen II SHO. So you would have to find someone willing to do a little custom work. I've had my rebuilt AX4N for a little over two years and 45,000 miles now and it still shifts great. At the very least, you want them to install a 99+ Valve body into whichever tranny they install. You can save some $$$ by buying your TransGo shift kit from Transmission Exchange. They are in Portland Oregon (Left coast)Kit is $42.38 plus shipping.

The life of the transmission is tied to the fluid and the cooler. This is a little late for this case, but a good transmission cooler will help to keep the temp down. Synthetic ATF is a good start and will outlast the conventional ATF by 3-4 times. Lubegard makes a additive transmission additive that I have used is three cars all Taurus's. After my first taurus tranny failed at 135k I had it rebuilt and had 40K on that one when I learned about lubegard. That tranny had 185k and 320k on the car when I hit a deer and totaled it out. The red bottle is added at 1 oz per QT of fluid in the Tranny ie10qt total. it cost about $12. I changed the fluid every 24k and added one 10 oz bottle, but have since found out that, since you only change 5 qt you only need to add 5 oz of the lubegard. The Lubegard gets rid of heat better than the normal ATF.

I feel your pain. My 94 is the shop right now.
I went to a local tranny guy that has been rebuilding for 15 years. I stopped in today, and he had the under carraige off and the tranny on the bench.

He let me look around while the car was up on the rack. He also pointed out my broken tranny mount, and leaking rear main. He is replacing both with no additional labor.

Also if you have a tranny job again buy a $25.00 VSS that mounts on top of the tranny. It could save you a $300 repair down the road.(NAPA)

The local guys usually will put in a transgo kit.
The chain shops won't guarentee the job if they put in a transgo **** kit.

The tranny cooler that is stock on the 94 is not sufficiant. Don't laugh but U-HAUL sells incredible "High Performance" tranny coolers at a very reasonavle price. 30-50 bucks. They have mutiple very thin cores that cool the fluid much faster.

My tranny job is costing me $1800 plus tranny mount and rear main gasket.

GO to AAMCO and with thier warranty plan you will never leave. That is the worst tranny shop in the world generally. A previous owner had one of my cars trannys rebuilt there and after some warranty work the tranny died. (had the car towed, repaired, filed a complaint with ammco, 3 months later no solution, took to court, won)I have since pulled the sick tranny out of the car. This is what I find, several bellhousing bolts missing, starter held on with 1 bolt, chewed up driveplate, broken tranny mounts, rounded bolts, stripped threads, and crossthreaded bolts....

Everyone NEVER go to AAMCO!!!!
