Well on Monday I was just driving and while coming to a stop at a light the car felt like it shifted down when I was at a complete stop. Light turns green and I try to take off and the car starts to rev while I'm in drive. Eventually I toss it into reverse and back into drive and it takes off. Down the road I feel this soft kick feeling and the car starts revving again. I pull over and check the tranny fluid and the level is fine and it's still red, so I get it towed to a shop. I can still move the car but I have to put it in park and restart the car, then a few seconds later it will act up again after I take off.

I had the mechanic add some lucas tranny fix in it, he says that it won't even stay in gear now. The first stop-light situation happened a month or so prior where it sat in drive and revved but after a second or so or revving the car put itself back into drive and I could take off, that was the only time the car did this and didn't happen again until Monday.

What am I looking at, tranny re-build or is there some other under-lying problem that I don't know about? Thanks for any insight.

Also, I take it the AX4N from a v6 will fit with the SHO so long as it's a 96-97 correct?

The SHO AX4N has a different final drive ration than the others. You could use one form a V6, but I am almost sure that it would throw an OBDII code for wrong final drive ratio and possibly other problems.

As far as what you are looking at, I would take a look in the pan first to see if anything is in there. I am sure a couple of the guys who have worked on them more could tell you some more.

No.

As James stated, V8 SHO tranny is V8 SHO specific. Figure about $1800-$2800 for rebuild depending on who you bring it to.

So, what is the specific name of the transmission I'm looking for then? AX4N SHO rather than AX4N metric/duratec?

I remember reading this "A 235 hp (175 kW) aluminum 3.4 L V8 engine with heads from Yamaha and block from Cosworth was specified for the SHO model, but it was given the same four speed transmission as the LX" from Wiki. Now I'm confused, sorry if I'm being dumb

I was priced at like $850 a rebuild from a local shop, he was looking into used transmissions last I checked. Might do that, or just part it out then.

It's all good. There's a few different AX4N's, and people seem to think that theyre all the same, when in fact they are not. That's all.

Hope everything works out.

My tranny has been doing the same thing on Red for the last year (about 12,000 miles). Only difference is it won't go into reverse either unless I turn it off or drop it into 2nd then rack it back into "R" or "D". Real odd thing is when I am rolling a stop or down around 20 to 25 and hammer the throttle I get a loss of gear (goes to neutral) but if I drop it back into 2 it will then 1 it will kick on down. I replaced the valve body and that did not take care of it though.
Good luck and please pass on what the tranny guy finds.

I am having a similar problem. I just got a code p0761. The trans. was not going into OD, the OD light was blinking and I had about the same problem with first gear at the same time. I checked on the internet about the code and the TSB, they both siad it was a brocken clip in the valve body. I dug in to the side cover to the valve body and it was the clip as they siad. This also seemed to cure the 1st gear problem. A week or so later,a day after I blow off a v6 honda, I was leaving a light and 1st gear shutered like a chatering clutch. I ran it agian later in the day and it was okey except once. I am wondering about the same thing as you are. I am going to try treatment and a filter change. It appeared when I fixed the clip it took care of both problems but maybe it was just a coincidence that both problems appeared at the same time and they will need different cures.

Any transmission fix in a bottle, is not a transmission fix. Something is broken, and you are trying to put off the inevitable.

I have seen first hand lucas take shuddering transmission under high load (slipping clutchs) and make that go away. Yes it is temporary but hay for 4 bucks it is worth a shot if you can get a couple more months.
