My torque converter is going and it’s not horrible yet but I spoke with someone and he said usually with these once the converter starts going the transmission should be replaced as well due to converter material going through the rest of the trans. What are your guys opinions? I’m weighing all my options as I just bought this car, it’s paid off but also hasn’t had the timing chain done yet and I’m not sure how the turbos are yet either other than car fax shows they have been “checked” a couple times. The car isn’t showing any dash codes yet but haven’t put a scanner on it to see if any hidden ones are there but it definitely has a converter issue. Opinions on having a complete overhaul and drive it till I die or cutting loses sell to Carmax and jump ship? I love the car but the fact that it’s kinda a dead platform in the performance aftermarket is a bummer. Feel free to leave your two cents in the comments I’m very torn on which direction to go with this thing.

Should add this is my current daily as my project mustang is in need of some serious tlc before I can get her back on the road. So taking on this job and having the while I’m in there syndrome take over as it usually does is what I’m very afraid of. So id probably be looking to have a shop do most of the heavy work as in trans and timing/water pump. Is 8k a realistic estimate to have both done? Am I to high to low?

I've replaced the torque converter and water pump/timing chain (Ford parts) for around $3K. Just find a good local shop that's not a stealership.

torque converter, fluid pump, and filter job go hand in hand. as to the internals and damage to them i don't see that happening without evidence of the damage in the fluid off the dipstick. have not seen people have issues with just a new torque converter unless they let the problem really drag on.

i have seen people do a tc job without taking the transmission out of the car. takes 2 people, and it's awkward, but possible on the Edge, not sure on the Taurus.

should be plenty of good shops in/around kentucky to do the wp/timing job too. i use repairpal and yelp to help narrow down choices if i don't have shop in mind already.

Pick up some Shudder Fix from an auto part store or Amazon and put a tube or 2 in your transmission. This MIGHT fix your issue but it should definitely help. If the shuddering comes back, and your trans fluid is good and to the proper level, then it's almost certainly the torque converter.
