Transmission Question.

Took a trip to ohio yesterday, things were fine, cruise set at 80, suddenly overdrive light starts blinking on and off. clicked it off and it came out, clicked it in,it went back in,but still blinking! Pulled off at next rest area and as soon as i stepped out i could smell trans fluid. Not leaking anywhere! I assummed the smell was coming from dip stick passage,checked fluid level,right to the mark,although it seemed hot. Sat at rest area for 2 hours to let everything cool down, then proceeded back to michigan at 50 mph. Made it home(120 miles) when i got out of the car, the essence of fluid was present again! Just to mention, trans was shifting and seemed ok.

Anyone got any ideas??

The flashing OD light is from the fluid getting over 300F. Either it is old fluid or you are having cooling problems. It should be changed as soon as possible as it is now trash more than likely.

Hey Paul,thanks for the reply,I have changed fluid and filter every 12,000 miles,have know idea why it got hot! Everytime ive changed it, magnet in pan always had minimal amounts of material on it. Do you think it could be something internally in the trans, or perhaps something plugged in line, maybe radiator? I know dam well i not pulling trany,still drives,i will trade it in if i must,hate to since i have so much invested. Would appreciate list of diag steps to take. Thanks Gary, Wayne,mi.

Hard to say. Is the TC locking up?

If you haven't added an AUX cooler you might think about it. Also replacing the factory cooler lines with full 3/8" hose and fittings helps a lot.
