Transmission Question, sluggish shift, not hard.

Its a 1994 sho with auto tranny. Its got like a delay between gears 1-2, it doesnt throw your head back and it does it mostly all the time. kind of like it hesitates before going into 2nd. Is it the TSS, The VSS, or something worse?

I would try the sensors first before jumping the gun on a rebuild, like others will likely suggest. A mechanic can make a great deal of money while you think he rebuilt the tranny! This is the mechanic when (enter name here) leaves after the repair: :snicker:

When a VSS goes bad it can cause your cruise control not to work, loose steering at higher speeds, sluggish shifts, harsh downshifts, and so on.

That's the first thing I would replace, and they've been known to cause problems without triggering the "check engine" light.

So far ive only noticed a hesitation between gears, I think i'll have the codes read first at autozone.

I pulled the codes, I got code 551, 172, 176, 332, 543. The funny thing is none of them say anything about the transmission, the vss or tss sensors, just like IAS circuit failure
EGR valve opening not detected etc etc.

A mechanical problem in the transmission will not light a code in most cases. It's likely that your transmission is slipping and is ready for a rebuild.

Let me just put the fear of SHO ownership in you here:

The longer you hold out on this, the more expensive it will be.

I just returned a car today that experienced a differential pin failure, broken output shaft, broken input shaft, and chunks of metal throughout the valve body. Had we torn into this when the symptoms began, we would have been looking at a largely different scenario.

A bit of interest on this particular car... The output shaft was broken the first time we went into it. The rebuild was completed and the transmission was reinstalled at which point the input shaft snapped during the transmissions first shift. Perhaps we should install a lighter accumulator spring... :)
