What is a fair/good price for a used transmission and what is a good price for a new transmission??? Today I talked with the shop that has my car, (had it for about 3 months now). They tried a new valve body and they say that didn't fix the problem. Now they are saying I may need to look at replacing it. They are going to try some other options and then check some prices and let me know. The thing is, they "rebuilt" my transmission back in the summer of 2007 and I haven't put a lot of miles on the car since then, we are talking less that 10,000 miles in 3 years here. I don't feel that I should have to pay full price for anything they do, after all they are the ones that freakin' "fixed" it the last time. I just want my car back, and working! :cuss::banghd::cuss:

That sucks. This is the second post about a recent rebuild (other was a GenII)this week to puke. Mental note to self to pay the piper for another ATX the first time. I think mine is slowly going out as well.

Extract as much as you can for as little as you can from the guys who have your car now. Get it back and start driving it again.
It looks like it is too big a job for them.
These cars are the best of the bunch, so I have heard, so I would go for the ultimate tranny like Ron Porter has suggested. It wouldn't be a mistake to put a great working automatic back in this car, even if it seems alot of money. Just because the cars don't sell for much now, doesn't mean they are not worth it.

For the price of one big part (and expensive I might add), you get your great car back in better form that it has ever been in.
It wouldn't be a mistake to spend $3000.00 for a trick tranny that is reliable. You can say you can buy a whole car for that... but so what. That money applied to your car get you back in top form. The other way, you have 2 cars that need attention.

Yeah I would Love a Doug Lewis Special Trans, but I just don't have the funds for that. I do plan on keeping the car for many years, hopefully anyway. I haven't had any major engine problems, seems that any issues this car has had have been trans related, and as far as the body and and interior are concerned, there aren't many out there in as good a shape as mine. Wonder if Doug would take payments!!!

Because of the high cost of labour to install the transmission, it would be wise to get the dream model and only do it once. Depending on how expensive it is to get a car registered and in your name in your state, consider switching to an econobox for a few months, till you can swing the the trick transmission and have the rebuilder install it, if possible. Then leave it with him until all the issues are worked out. No matte how much you pay, it will be worth it.
