Hey folks.
I was wondering how you guys go about keeping these " non-serviceable" transmissions from destroying themselves. Myself I like to do a partial fluid swap with synthetic Amsoil every other oil change. Is that enough ?

I've done mine twice a year, each year since having purchased new, regardless of mileage accrued.

I have a tick over 81k on the clock, and (knock on wood) no issues to speak of to date.

She saw DD duties her 1st 5yrs, several passes at the drags, and a few road course/auto crosses and has performed and continues to perform, flawlessly.

The cost of fluid is so reasonable, and it's an easier service to perform than doing an oil change, that it seems silly to NOT embrace such a schedule.

Sounds like you are employing a great regimen, so I would bargain to say you will reap similar benefits therein.

Enjoy!!

I bolded BPD statement. This is such an understatement. I change my oil every 3 (k) miles, and do the 5 QT trans fluid swap while I am under the car as well.

The transmission fluid is extremely serviceable :) but the transmission filter/screen not so much :nut:

The PTU and RDU fluids, however, are deemed non-serviceable by Ford, officially.

3 miles?.....That is the most intense regimen i ever heard of. I would imagine when ever you say i think i will take the beast for a cruise you really mean i taking it down the road for a fluid change! Keep up the good work but honestly i think you could stretch it out to 25 or even 50 miles and still be good!

Ha! I'm sure sm105k meant to say 3k, but the freudian slip (and you catching it) is still funny nonetheless.

Bought the car new and was thinking 20-25K mile intervals for the fluid (almost at 20K). Easy access and inexpensive fluid...wish the PTU service was that simple.

As a followup to my earlier post, I changed the transmission fluid as a part of my 20K mile service the other day. Exactly 4.25 QT came out and I replaced it with the same amount of fresh fluid.

The original fluid was a brownish-red color (significantly discolored from new) but at least came out clean (no visible particles). Based on these observations, I will change the fluid again at 30K miles (to cycle all the factory fluid out) and will stick to a 15K mile service interval from there on out.

Does anyone know the specs for the transmission drain plug? Thinking of swapping out the factory plug for a magnetic one.

Mercon LV gets dark REALLY quick. I wouldn't be so worried about the color but I would be about the flavor. (KIDDING) if it smelled but, that's a problem. If you have never smelled burt trans oil, you'll know it when it happens.

I'm pretty confident that the oil pickup/filter has a magnet in/on it.

There are a lot of non ferrous parts in the transmission. You can put an extra one in, but it might not do anything.

Guess it's all relative, but I have seen LV at 30K that looked like it was burnt. It didnt smell burnt with no transmission issues.

It's a 1/8-27 npt. There are quite a few magnetic motorcycle plugs on eBay, etc for about 10bucks I've looked at that should work.

The filter has a magnet on it, but there is also non ferrous metal in our transmission that wears.
