I just found out my SHO was one of the unlucky ones that had the diff pin go through the case.... 3 holes it made. I know i need a new clutch and flywheel. Stock clutch and flywheel from factory. My question is..... Will this be ok and will i need anything else besides this and a flywheel? Does the year matter? I was told the 89/90 were different?

Any reviews good or bad? Is the lightweight flywheel worth it also?

Does anyone have a trans for sale? MTX preferably with a upgraded diff?

The 89s and 90s could possibly have a 9 1/4" clutch disc. All others are 9 3/4".
Use your flywheel (if 9 3/4") and have it resufaced.
Get the stock clutch as the Throw Out Bearing usually gives up first. Buying a more expensive clutch doesn't help that issue.
There are transmissions with the upgrade in the classifieds on this forum.

Your issues will be the manifold studs and the sub-frame bolts and bushings.
Buy new, or good used, or reinforced motor mounts (tranny mount too), before you start.
Pay attention to the clutch fork and the connector to the cable, as people have problems in that area. The clutch disc can be put in backwards, so look for markings.
A real good price to install a clutch kit is $500.00, the whole tranny thing will be more.
The clutch kit is usually $250 - $300.00.

I know it is the 9 1/4 for sure. So i can go to a stock 9 3/4 and it would technically support more power? I already have the studs being replaced. The subframe bushings were done 2 years ago with aluminum. So it is really not worth it going to a stage one? I tend to drive like a dick. Stoplight sprints to about 80 or so.

Im not sure at all. Im just a computer nerd that likes sho's lol.

All i know is my clutch has about 5k miles left on it max and its stock everything 9 1/4.

I know I will be doing a few bolt on's like bbb, new catless y pipe and exhaust maybe. I just dont want it to slip when i drive more agressive at times.

Everyone is different, but I would go with the stock setup, and maybe a ceramic Throw Out Bearing if the price is right.
I have never worn a clutch disc out, but I have chewed through a lot of TOBs and pressure plate fingers. Anything that has a higher clamping pressure will just shorten the TOB life (in my opinion).
If you are getting by with a 9 1/4 clutch now, the regular one will seem great.

Put your money in the upgraded differential, and that will serve you better.

There shouldn't be many of the 9.25" clutches out there just because you have a car it came in doesn't mean its still there. Ford was changing them with a recall IIRC. Just look at the PP if its 1/4" thick or 1" thick metal.

The alldata article 91-23-4 was not done at all. It was just never done on this car. 1/4 sounds familiar.... I will check with my trans guy tomorrow and let you guys know.

isn't the flywheel the same? didn't they just change the configuration of the pp to allow a larger disk? that means you just need the 9.75" clutch kit and you are golden.

If you like the feel of the 9 1/4 setup, I would get the steel billet flywheel and stock clutch. The clutch, pressure plate and billet flywheel weighs the same as the 9 1/4 set up. The increase weight of the 9 3/4 cast pressure plate is offset by the lighter weight of the billet flywheel.

I found out the pressure plate was cast if that helps? I really wish i could find a used qualfie/wavetrack and not just weld the pins :( Its just hard spending 2200-2700 for a trans, welded diff, clutch labor and flywheel.

....and new flywheel. If im replacing the flywheel, might as well do aluminum

my point was that you are not required to replace the flywheel to change the clutch. you can just have it cleaned up / resurfaced if you wish.

I do agree that the lighter flywheel would be a performance improvement.

Well if the PP is cast you need the 9.75" disk. A resurface will suffice in this situation.

Here's a stock clutch with drag radials. It was on sale at Rockauto for like $122.

The SHO does not need some monster clutch.

SO if i get the 9 3/4 clutch kit i would need the new flywheel only? Nothing else to make the upgrade to 9 3/4

I would recommend a South Bend Stage 1 Clutch: SHO Source

The weak point on the stock clutch is the straps which can give way. I had a stock clutch fail after only a few hundred miles due to the straps. I have been running a Stage 1 clutch since then and it has worked great.
