Well, my 1991 mtx has exactly 150k miles on it. It has gradually been getting harder and harder to shift. It has also started grinding everyonce in awhile going into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gear. I took it to a transmission shop, and he said the the synchros aren't lining up. Should I rebuild it? Will I be able to find the parts I need to fix it? I don't have access to the equipment necessary to fix it myself, so I would be paying a local shop to fix it. I tried a search, but didn't find the answer to my questions. If it's there and I missed it, feel free to flame away, lol.

MTX Transaxle Rebuild Kit - $599

The kit comes with following:

1 Front Gearchange Shaft Seal
2 Axle Seals
1 Front Input Shaft Seal
1-2, 3-4, 4-5 Blocking Rings and Synchronizers
6 Shaft Bearings, 2 Differential Bearings
1 Tube of Hylomar

This is from www.shoshop.com I am sure you could find it somewhere else though too. You know this would also be a good time to get a QUAIFE installed.

I don't know if anyone here has business with these guys, but someone posted this link a while ago. $212 for an SHO rebuild kit.

Also, talk to Bizzy or SDPatt, they know how to do it now, and so might know a better parts source.

Maybe look around for a rebuilt tranny to put in.

Maybe you can pull the transmission and ship it to a competent SHOer, maybe you could pay them to do it.

Otherwise, the tranny shop will have to charge you quite a bundle to lift the engine a little, take out the axles and drop the subframe, just to get the tranny out. Then parts, a couple of hours to rebuild, and then reassembly.
Good luck!

Drivetrain.com was the only place I could find that had a replacement bearing for inside my tranny. The cone bearing was inexpensive and they even removed the old one and installed the new one for me.

I highly doubt that the SS listing of parts is accurate, especially for the price listed. (Don't get me wrong, the guy who listed the link only knows what's on their website)

Don't pay through the nose to have it rebuilt. I could do it for much less than what you'd pay a shop to do it and I have many of the parts in stock. I've got lots of parts sources as well.

Well, looks like I'm getting rid of my SHO. I can't justify spending that much money to fix a car I paid $2k for 50k miles ago, when I can buy a whole car with a good transmission for that much or less.
