Transmission died

My transmission died today. I am wondering what you recommend when having them rebuilt to make them more reliable/better/performance wise etc.. Know of any good kits to use? Thanks!

I was told that a well known shop called level ten makes a really good tranny that gives a lot better performance than a regular rebuild. heres the site:

Transgo shift kit, backdate the pump shaft seals to 1 piece, update the pumpshaft to a high-flow pumpshaft (sometimes referred to HD pump shaft) and weld the low speed drum to prevent separation.

Thats to name a few.

If you can get the trans down to NJ, Level 10 is the way to go. They will basically build up any trans known to man, though they are mainly know for domestic trans rebuilds. I'm going there to get my 2004R rebuilt when funds allow.

My car was driving fine down the road, at about 140km/hr.. I was doing this for about 10 minutes when all power was lost. I pulled over, and the car didn't want to go anywhere fast, it felt like it was in a "limp mode".. I let it cool down for about 20 min, then it drove fine. I drove for about another 45 minutes when the same thing happened again, so I tried letting it cool. It didn't work this time, The car refuses to do anything over 10 km/hr, its not slipping, the RPM won't go above 1500 while in gear.. Sometimes it would stall the car out after driving this slow for a minute or two.. Any ideas? Also, I hear a loud hissing/blowing sound outside the car

Vacuum leak? Are your cams welded?

Yes the cams are welded.. turns out it was the 3rd cat and flex pipe had imploded and plugged (possibly due to the horrible missfire when I first got the car)

good thing I got rid of my 3rd kitty already lol... My old jeep did that except I looked under and the catalytic converter was glowing red hot.... just be glad that your trans is ok and you had a good reason to cut off the 3rd cat!

I think with you install the new one you should install a transmission cooler, a must for any Taurus.

So could you name everything involved?
In about a month I will be having my trans rebuilt and need to know everything, All I knew before this post was basically- Transgo, better cooler,and synthetic fluids.
Hypothetically speaking, if I were to go to AAMCO and tell them I want a rebuild with a Transgo kit, the stuff done to the pump shaft, weld the "low speed drum",and add an auxilary cooler, would they know what I was talking about and could accomodate?
