trans problems

my friends 93 ATX can get 1st and reverse but no higher gear if he put into D drive when it gets to 4 grand he can let off and push the gas again it does nothing he has to put it in 2 or 1 to get it moving again but it's 1st gear. any ideas

My guess is his planetary gears in the Trans are done. First gear is the only gear that doesn't use it. But that's just my guess. Hope I'm wrong.
