The speedometer does not work, and the transmission does not shift correctly because of it. Occasionally, when coming to a stop, the transmission does not downshift correctly, and the engine will stall.

the speedo not working is because of the speedo cable but it could be fudged at the vss... bad shifting would probley also be the vss... my 95 when i got it before the mtx swap had trouble figuring out where it wanted to be when it came to overdrive and all it needed was a vss and it shifted perfect after

my guess is your torque converter is not unlocking when you are comming to a stop. If you manualy shift the transmission into 1st gear it will automaticaly unlock since the transmission is incapable of having a locked converter in first gear.

my vote is transmission problem. please check to see if it is throwing any transmission codes and let me know what it going on.

I think he means TPS (throttle position sensor). That sensor can definately play with shifting because it will tell the transmission that the thottle is at a certain range and keep it in second.

It sounds like your speedo cable is disconnected or loose at the VSS. I changed my VSS by hand on my ATX. If you don't mind lots of scrapes that's the way to go. But, if the VSS or TPS doesn't cure your issue you most likely have a tranny issue. I would run codes because a bad TPS will most likely spit a code.

If you see either of these codes then your issue is either a:
VSS issue:
452 (M) Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) problem
TPS issue:
121 (O,R,M) Throttle Position (TP) sensor out of range - TPS
122 (O,M) TP low (possibly grounded or open circuit) - TPS
123 (O,M) TP is/was high or short to power - TPS
