Hello all, have a problem.... Since I no longer can drive my 95, I have been driving the 92 I had planned on selling... Lately it has had a clutch issue where you have to have the clutch ON THE FLOOR in order to shift into first, and no matter what it grinds slightly going into reverse... Driving on the highway today at about 55, not beating on it or anything, it was like i hit a cinderblock (sp?) or something, like something hit the car really hard, but i was still rolling, and could still drive.. I drove to a gas station, and checked things out, i had the fluid of the transmission leaking badly... Is that a cracked case, or what? I was able to one leg the car to a lot, but being that its leaking gearlube, i cant really drive it far... I do have a transmission, as I think my 95 MTX will be used for parts, but any ideas of what it could be? would a cracked trans. case cause this to happen??? HOw could a case get cracked? Thanks in advance for the help, it is MUCH appreciated!

Well, well....Without being there I can't tell you exactly what it is but, since this happened to me 6 months ago, I am sad to inform you of a blown differential. What you felt was the transmission bind up for a quick sec and thats when it cracked your case. Time to use your 95 as a parts car. I bought a parts car for less then people had a tranny for sale, so that would be your best route. I'm sorry to be the first to have to write you on this issue. Good luck and godspeed.

Thanks for the heads up on it, how do the differentials break? I was not beating on it at all, just driving along! Also, wouldnt it have made some noise before now, verses just blowing up??? Also, why was I able to drive it still, if indeed the differential is shot?? Sorry for all the q's, i am not very familiar with this!
Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated!

What happens is the pins slowly slides out and eventually hits the case. At this point, well after mine hit, I was able to drive about 20 miles home, but after 15 miles and 3 cinderblock styles hitches it would only go straight. I had a lock front end from then on, so when I would turn it would bind and make banging noises. It was pretty bad. The differential is the weakest point on the SHO tranny. One wheel burn outs is the major cause of this. Not saying you did it, but mabye the previous owner did quite a few and the damaged was started at that point. Once the Pin is moved off center in the differential from these one wheeled burns, it's only a matter of time before its out enough. Its doesn't give any warnings at all before failure, the only way to check it is to pull the cases apart and check it over on every clutch job.
I hope this answers some of you questions.
Good luck.

Yep. Sorry man. Same thing happened to me awhile back. Driving, and boom. Then the car started smoking and leaking fluid.

SHOTIME was able to drive his car for a few miles after the pin blew, but that was only with neccesity. he said it still shifted fine, but didn't want to risk toasting everything else.

Yeah, I drove it about 10 miles to my dads car lot, ubt the car is going to be worked on about 15 miles away, so Im guessing I should have it towed, so I dont end up on the side of the road with a locked transmission.... Thanks to all for the heads up, anyone have an easy way of explaining what the quaife (sp?) trans is?
Thanks!

While we are on the topic of differentials, why hasnt anyone come up with a cheap way to fix that damn pin? $1200 is alot of money for the quallife, I am sure its worth it but somthing needs to be cheaper to improve the pin situation. I could live with one leggers by the way, just not with frying a differential twice a year.

In the diff. there are 3 pins. 1 long one that goes clear through, and 2 short ones that are held in with roll pins. Are they all called diff pins and which one came out of everyones trannys. I had one of the short pins come shooting out the bottom of my tranny last winter ( unfortunately I don't know what it sounded like because I wasn't there when it happened) and it was still driveable enough to get it on and off the trailer. I wondered then if you could weld the short pins in since moving doesn't appear to be a requirement for them. Any thoughts?

I have a 91 I am pretty sure that it has been beat hard by the previous owner. I was wondering how many of you have done the diff. replacement yourselves, and any comments of a/m diff's. I know that its going to come shooting out soon I just hope not to soon.
