Well I might have done it now. A little history...

About a year or so ago I had a rear valve cover leak. It was leaking oil on to the header and stinking (and smoking from time to time) I pulled it apart and found that the rear valve cover gasket had gotten out of place and was a bear to get to stay in place long enough to tighten the cover. Non-the less, problem solved.

About 2 months ago the problem and occasional smoke came back. I assumed it was the same thing since the symptoms were the same and since the gasket was a little squirrelly anyway. My life’s been pretty hectic lately so I just kept an eye on the oil level and decided to fix it the next time I had a chance. I was driving back from Hartford on Friday and I noticed it seemed to locking and unlocking the TC. I assumed it was the A/C with the defrogger and I put a mental reminder to have my levels checked. About 5 miles from home I came to a stop sign and when I started to go again, it went then seemed to kick out of gear for a sec then **** and go. It was dark and late so I babied it home. By the time I hit the driveway it was doing the go-slip-****-go thing worse but only at stops. There was a puddle under it on Sat morning.

My question is this: Obviously the tranny was leaking on the exhaust somehow causing the smell and smoke: what are the most common leak points that would cause this type of leak? Is my transmission fried?

The car has 114K (original trans!) and the value is pretty much nothing, but with the tranny out in it the value is damn near zero. Any advice? I think I have to fix it or I'm going to have a worthless car on my hands that I can't even trade. I stopped by the Subaru dealer and looked at the Impreza WRX wagons and Legacy GT's. Not really interested in a car payment right now tho but I've wanted one for a while and this might by my push!

Thanks in Advance!
Brad

P.S. My local Ford wants $2700 to swap it out with a reman unit.

Sounds like you probably blew out the converter seal. You can pull the little plastic inspection cover between the oil pan and bellhousing, and if the inside of the bellhousing is wet, well, there you go. Basically, yes, your transmission is fried.

FWIW, we're about an hour north of Hartford, 10 minutes from the end of I-84 in Spencer, MA. One of our rebuilt trannys with a shift kit and 12 month unlimited mile warranty is $1599. http://www.nesho.com

I wouldn't comment on the ethics, but a friend had identical symptoms, changed the filter and gasket, added the oil to minus 1/2 pint, then added a quart of Lucas trans. stop-leak. It drove like a champ for the 6 miles it took to get it to the lot he traded it to. Like he said...." I've got nothing but a few bucks to lose........" I never did find out why he overfilled it, but he acted like it was SOP in this situation.
