What causes a chunk out of the bottom of the tranny to fly off during a 2-3 shift at 5-6 grand?!! I wasn't driving, the same friend who blew the motor on my 88 GL was. (Yeah, Yeah, I am kicking myself in the @$$ as your reading this.) Anyway, we found the piece that came off the bottom. The car still drives, at least enough to get it on and off the trailer. I haven't been able to block it up and look yet but I could see gear teeth and some other parts of the inside of the tranny. The broken off piece has a small fork bolted onto it and the fork has a 1 stamped into it. The fork is also embedded into the bottom of the piece.

Every part of what you said sounds like you threw a diff pin except the being able to drive it on and off the trailer.

I have a few non-rebuilt good trannys and a rebuilt one for sale. shoot me an email at [email protected] if your interested.

Sounds like a really expensive friend. Does he let you beat the crap out of his car?

Definitely an expensive friend luigisho. He doesn't have a car right now because of his old girlfriend. I think I felt sorry for him so I let him drive mine when he needed it.

I was looking at my manual this morning and I figured out that the shift gate plate is broken. At least thats what the small fork with the 1 stamped onto it is a piece of anyway. The piece broke off right where the selector cable goes into the tranny. I am waiting for an open bay at the shop where I work so I can look at it a little better. I could almost do it outside with as warm as its been here though.

I don't know, I think he was slamming gears a little too fast maybe. I wasn't there but the guy riding with him says he was shifting pretty fast and at high rpms.

Shodude, I am pretty sure now that the shift gate plate broke because of something internal hitting it. I finally got the tranny out last night and the case is all broken up around the differential on the engine side. There is another small hole on the top just beside the speedo cable and the case is all cracked up just inside the bell housing. After looking at that, I really have no idea how I could still drive it, especially without any clanging or grinding!

Sounds like new tranny time. See if you can get a used one and freshen it up or maybew shodude has a strong one. I'd be really ****** that a friend slammed gears while borrowing my car. I'm sure since he doesn't have his own car that he can't pay to fix yours either. Sorry dude.
