anyway whats up everyone. I'm Mike from Muskogee,Oklahoma I have a 91 SHO i bought about a year ago. Well anyway I was driving to tulsa last friday night and CRACK CRACK VVVVVRooooooom I had no tranny left. (well first would go but then when i tried to stop it would be locked up) well found another tranny the next moring at a junk yard in town. Me and my buddy went to pull it with no prob... Now here is the thing.. Went to take my tranny out and it seems to be stuck. we have it pulled from the motor about a gap of a half inch. we can see the halfshaft. Is that what is holding it on? I am pretty sure we have all the bolts out. We worked on it six hours last night and I still have not been to bed. Its now 7:24 am. we started around 1:10 anyway any imput on this would be great! I just bought about 3,000 in parts off sho shop and other sho buying areas...stay tuned for heavy upgrades after i get this tranny prob fixed...assoon as i get it out i can put in my new stage three clutch and 8lbs flywheel! :****:

I assume the subframe is down in order to allow enough clearance for tranny removal. If so, I think you have to just keep twisting and pulling. Something in the clutch area is hanging up. Or, I have had one hang up on the plate/shim that goes between the oil pan and the bell housing on the bottom due to improper installation of the plate by a previous owner.

BTW, I don't think a half inch is enough clearance, so you should be pulling the trans outboard toward the wheel well until it comes off, then down out the bottom.

You can see the halfshaft?? Both axles must be removed to take the tranny out. Double check that you got all the bolts/studs out including the bottom 2 that go through the oil pan into the tranny. If you can move it away from the engine like 1/21 inch the it's probably just hanging up on the alignment dowels. Make sure the tranny mount is off so you can completely move the tranny away off the engine. Other than that you just need to pull it away and it should come free.

As already stated, the subframe must be removed for the tranny to come out. There's really nothing that can hang up the tranny inside the bell housing, unless the clutch disc hub or input shaft is screwed up.

Do i take the subfram completly off? if i do so wont the motor calapse?

The subframe must be removed. Completely. You need to support the engine from above with a transverse engine support bar. This is the type of operation where a service manual can be invaluable,

MADMIKE,

If you ask SDPATT real nice he will e-mail you a set of drawings for a motor support he designed just for pulling the trans.

In fact, before you bother hime do a search under his name and "engine support" and the drawings may already be on one of the old posts. It could also be searched under trans rebuild or clutch replacement.

It is an inexpensive rig to build and it works. While your at it do a search on axel removal! rangerj

Wait a minute.......you do have the motor completely supported right? Not just from under the car but from above. Please tell me yes. Having a jack under the motor is not enough, it's just not safe.

When I pulled my tranny, there was one tranny to engine bolt I missed that was kinda hidden. It goes from the engine side towards the tranny and it's a little above where the starter is. Also there's a bolt going the same way near the speed sensor on the tranny. Have you gotten the two bolts on the bottom of the tranny out?

Build Scott Patterson's support and do it right! You are taking a BIG chance on your life. Also, the support allows the proper downward engine pivot required to drop the tranny. Do it right and stop messing around. The cost is minimal.

The support doesn't have to be as meticulous as his is, just functional. Scott is a pro and is meticulous by nature (this is a complement if any should doubt). Be sure to use the inner braces. I used deck screws and Liquid Nails on all joints. Also used deck screws along the 2x4s, especially around the eye bolts. The support is very strong. You can get the proper rear lifting bolt(size and hardness) on the rack at Checker. I couldn't find a proper bracket, so I used a longer bolt and four washers behind the chain. The bolt size varies by generation as I understand.

I used 2x6s for the side supports on front and back. Had to make deeper cuts in the back.

I had to do this service three times with this support and never doubted it once. Nor have I had ANY trouble with it.

Get the procedure and follow the directions. Cutting corners will only make it harder and longer as you already know.

Do a search on Scott's engine support and read all about it as wells as find the plans.

Don't be afraid to ask more questions.

As far as bolts are concerned, there are 3 (15mm) stud-bolts entering from the driver's side along the top. There are 3 (15mm) regular bolts- 2 from the passenger side through the dowls and and one just above the left dowl bolt (as looking from the driver's side)that enters from the driver's side (about 3" up). And finally there are the 2 (13mm) bolts that enter from the oil pan.

I suspect that you removed all of these already as it is hard to imagine the tranny moving at all with even one of the 15mm bolts in place, though I certainly could be wrong.

Good luck.

Use ATF (automatic Tranny Fluid) A lot of people have had good look with Mobile 1. I'm using 1 qt of Modile 1 and 2 qts of synthetic B&M trick shift.
