Ok, I've had these two little issues....ok two MAJOR issues since I bought the car. First off, I did not have the opportunity to have these problems surface during my test drive.

1st problem noticed: I drove around that night to SHO [ ;) ] my friends & took it onto the highway to mash on it. I left the tranny in OD and it got to 108 and wouldn't go any faster; like I was hitting a speed limiter  So I left it go & soon after [two-three weeks] a CEL lit up for the DPFE sensor I think it was. I mentioned it to the tech I go through & he said he wasn't aware of one, but he'd scan the ECU & clear it. I get the car back & on a deserted section of local highway, I downshifted the tranny manually to D and ran that to 135 without issue. However, now I can't get it past 112, WTF!!?? :smash:

2nd problem noticed: I've had this happen twice now. I'll be rolling up to a traffic light [red] and while still rolling about 5 mph in OD, I'll punch it and the car jumps forward and then......it seems like the tranny jumps into neutral [rev's skyrocket] & then dumps the tranny back into gear, giving a LOUD bucking sound [bad] and causing the tires to spin pretty well [cool], but I'm absolutely sure this isn't good for the tranny [again, bad]. I mentioned this to the dealer & they said they haven't heard of this issue at all, but my buddy's Aerostar does this under the same conditions. Other than that, the tranny never acts up.

:help: :banghd:

Sounds like the tranny is on its way out. You might get lucky with just a flush and a change of the tranny filter. That might get you a few more miles out of it. There's a slim chance that your battery may be weak. These cars do some funny things with a weak battery. Either way, start saving for a tranny rebuild (every ATX Taurus owner should).

The DPFE is part of the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system. That shouldn't cause any problems other than higher NOx emissions.

The problem getting to high speed might be related to the IMRC. That's the little box that opens and closes the secondary valve to let the engine breath more air. When operational you'll hear the engine get louder at higher rpms (above ~3500 rpms). If it's stuck closed the engine might be struggling to breath.

It's exactly what happened to my transmission right before it went. Felt like a neutral drop in first gear. Tranny was fried a couple of days later.

Get it looked at ASAP. Seriously. Park it if you can.

Well since mine is Ford 'Certified Pre-Owned', I got the 4 year/48K mile warranty. I knew I could use it for the cam issue [which is why I'm holding out on a weld job], but the tranny's covered as well.
