tranny temperature...

I just installed a gauge. What temps. should I expect to see?
1. Highway driving: very easy on the tranny
2. Spirited driving: abusive

This obviously depends on the outside temp. I was seeing 140F with no radiator cooler, the OEM aux cooler and an large Hayden tank cooler with ambient temps in the 20-30F range. As soon as it gets warmer I will put in a 190F oil t-stat to keep the fluid around there as a minimum temp. I would think anything around 180-200F is good.

I was seeing 240F this last summer going up the mountains while doing spirited driving and the TC not locking up. With the TC finally locking thanks to Doug Lewis the temps dropped 30-40 degrees.

You can get an inline oil T-stat for that type of purpose? Where?

FPS sells them. You can also get them at Jegs and Summit Racing. I got one for the PS system too. I have never seen the PS fluid hotter than 145F.

There are 3/8" and 1/2" sizes. I would get the 1/2" and reduce it down for the tranny. The PS would need the 1/2".

In a 30 minute drive (mostly highway), I got about 137 degrees. Temp here is about 45 degrees Farenheit.
Does it matter what type of wire is ran from the sending unit to the gauge?

If it is just a single wire sender and as long as there is minimal resistance the wire is not a factor.

The tranny lines are 3/8" arn't they? Why would you then need to get the 1/2" one and reduce it down?

I use a 1/2" tranny cooler and a 1/2" Mangafine filter in line too. When the opportunity arises I will tap out the cooler line ports on the tranny to 1/2" FPT from the OEM 1/4" FPT and go 1/2" hose all the way.

Using the 1/2" sized t-stat will assure you that this is not a restriction point. I also use plastic hose barbs which have a thinner wall/larger ID than brass.

I went to Autozone today and had the alternator tested. The car sat in idle for 20 minutes. The tranny temp got up to 190 degrees. It was about 125 degrees when I pulled in to Autozone.
Is this normal?

Ouch! Driving very hard in full summer, mine has never gone over ~190. Normal seems to be about ~140, with lowest under light conditions and cold weather ~100.

Mine went that high because the TC was not locking up. That and chasing other SHOs up the desert mountains.....
