ok so i recently bought my first 5 speed sho 89 for $650. the guy stated the shift cables were bad but after i changed to a rod shift still have problems.the issue is that when it does not like to go into first gear engine on or off. but will go into gear occasionally what would cause this. the guy at rcmautomotive.com said might be throw out bearing issue. any one else have this issue and what was the outcome? if all else fails might be time to change tranny

In most cases , changing the oil helps alot. Mobil , Royal purple does wonders. (synthetic ATF)

If it doesnt , you might have a TOB/clutch issue , or you need synchros/blocking ring on the first gear.

Where is the bite point of the clutch on your clutch pedal travel?
At the top, at the bottom in the carpet, half way up?

If it's the TOB, usually the MTX will still go into first if the engine is off. But it will grind if the engine is on. Do a forum search and you'll find instructions on how to disconnect the rod shifter at the MTX and manipulate the shift shaft with a screwdriver to check out shifting into each gear. i concur with the advice to change the fluid to Mobil 1 ATF.
