I noticed the level is about an inch above the crosshatches on the dipstick. This is on a hot engine AND going through the gear changes too.
I thought I heard that it is NOT good to overfill. Is this correct? If so, why?

Yes, it sounds like you have a little too much fluid in there. Problem with that is that the fluid can foam up and not pump through the tranny properly resulting in lack of lubrication, etc. You're probably not that overfilled that it would be a problem, but staying within the x-hatch range would still be a good thing to do.

Any way to drain it besides unbolting the pan and letting some drip out?
If it has a front mount cooler like Gen IIs you can drain from the sender line (on passenger side of cooler). To drain more, start the engine for a few seconds with the ATX in park - pumps out quickly.
I always overfill AXOD transmissions by one quart. They suffer from poor lubrication of the planetaries, and I have heard from a few reputable shops (and online) that adding one quart past the Full crosshatch is a good thing. Donno about the Gen III ATX though.

I checked mine and found it a quart over, asked the person who I bought it from about it since he rebuilt the transmission. He informed me that with the shift kit, it advises that it should be 1 quart over. It says to do that because if you dont it will run out of fluid on hard accel. for the planetary lubrication :thumb:

I agree that we always over fill transmissions as well. Maybe not a whole quart. But definatly over the cross hatch. I have always done this based on the theory of hard acceleration making all of the fluid slosh to the back of the pan. Making sure that there is not chance to starve the unit for fluid. We have not had any problems.
