ok, i get the code that says the tps is out of test range. i searched it as to how to adjust it but i could not find it. simple question....how do i adjust the TPS. i read that anything between .6 and 1.0 is good. how do i test it and if it is out of adjustment, how would i adjust it?

Uh...

dude.

Buy a new one.

It's $15, and takes all of 35 seconds to replace. You cannot adjust them. Just do it. Two phillips screws. You do know where it is, right? if you don't, that's cool, we can show you.

You can adjust them a little bit... if you loosen the screws you can turn it a bit... not much tho. IIRC you need to test it with the key on, center and top wire I think. Try sticking a paper clip in the back side where the wire enters the connector. Don't let the 2 clips touch tho.. or I'd bet you pop an inline fuse, or smoke that TPS all together...

And its on the front side of the throttle body... only thing there with phillips screws.

To add, there is really no need to adjust the TPS after installation. The EEC will learn the new "range", if you will.

Just slap a new one on, reset the computer, and go.

ok, for the 108,315,621,285th time: you cannot adjust the TPS with the screw. At least, not with any longevity. The ECU will dial whatever adjustments you make to the screw right back out in a matter of days.

Do not touch the screw. It is not meant to be fiddled with.

Replace the TPS.

Not the throttle plate screw... don't you navy boy's know how to read? The 2 that hold it up there... geez for the 10001230912049812349827310982347 time... :p Your moving the TPS not the stop screw.. that would be a FLATHEAD screwdriver.. I said philips...

FWIW... mine is just outta range and appears to be ok.. the closest I can get to .6, was like .54 something...

But you can adjust the position of the TPS a little bit to change the voltage, yes.... but it is only a $15 part... :)

well if its as easy as replacing it for it to work correctly.....then something else is wrong. this is the 3rd one i have on there and its still telling me that its out of test range. any other ideas as to what could be causing this?

Now we're getting somewhere.... If it's out of range... it would be good to test and see what its actually at.... I don't think it would be too high, more than likley too low.. or possibly no voltage at all... That connector always seems to be "just long enough".. and I wonder if possibly you might have a shorted connector.

You really should get a multimeter on it, and see what your getting at that connector. Its nothing more than a potentiometer with a DC output that changes with throttle plate angle.

The 2 pins on the outside should measure between 4 - 6 volts... if you have good power going to it... then %95 it'll be the TPS thats junk.

The bottom wire is the SIG RTN. Top is the VREF. Now... if you put the meter between the middle one, and the bottom one, you *should* be able to watch the voltage change while you manually operate the throttle... (key on, engine off)

Without a breakout box... its kinda hard to test the wiring harness, but not impossible...

You can back probe the connector. The signal return wire with the key on engine off needs to be under 1V. Preferably .95-.99V

You probably meant "SIGNAL" wire, not "signal return.

Try to get it as close to .99 volts without exceeding that value while the throttle is in the idle position.

If necessary, wallow out the two mounting screw holes to give it a bit of rotational range as needed.

FWIW, anything above .6 V will work fine as the computer will, as already noted, make the needed corrections.

You can't adjust it. I agree with everyone else, for the price it is, just replace it.

Uh...

You can't adjust it.

yes you can, every one of my SHO's is set to .96 volts.

My atx adjusted right to .96. at max adjustment, my mtx at max was .87v, so I slotted the screw holes with a drill bit and made it exactly .96v. .96v is just about ideal, you don't want it to close to 1v because sometimes they kind of readjust themselves from use and it will end up over 1 volt as the TPS is VERY sensitive, and every meter is not perfect. You do not want it over .99v, then the computer thinks you're stepping on the gas. What I do is after slotting the holes enough (not all have to be slotted so check it first), stick the probe right into the plug of the tps's middle wire (I think) and ground your ground lead. Adjust it, tighten the screws, snap the throttle a few times and it will probably move so readjust it again if it becomes to far off, you wont get it perfect but make sure its not to far off and you're good.:thumb:
