Torque Rating

I need to know the torque rating for the bolts that hold down the intake to the surgetank and to the valve cover.I've got the rear intake off and Im needing to reassemble it and reassemble the intake tubes.will two lbs work on them or is that too much to strip the aluminum threading?Thank you--Alaric

just do it till its tight

doesnt have to be real specific, but you'll know if its not tight enough

Im sure one of the V8 guru's will chime in.. But i'm sure it's between 7-15ft.lbs. as with alot of AL. tq. ratings...

14-20 lb. ft. is the range for all the intake bolts. 18 usually works good.

I would not use a torque wrench on the intake bolts myself. To me this invites stripping the bolt. Personally use a 1/4" ratchet and go strictly by feel.

Ok i torque wrenched the bolts on. I set it to the lbs-ft rating the mechanic that serviced my car did. I only took the rear intake and surge tank off to get to no.2 coil so I took the rating from the front bolts and applied that to the rear intake bolts.I made sure everything lined up correctly and that I shouldnt have stripped them.Tell me this is logical... Oh yea, we gotta do something about v6ers puting v6 knowledge into v8 issues.Not that I've got anything against v6ers( I lover the cars and the people on the forums) but to a newer v8 owner I revere all words like the writing of God and that would be detrimental to newbies----Alaric

I'm not saying using a torque wrench will strip the threads. But if the threads in the LIM or the bolts are corroded or your parts are not aligned right you may strip out the soft aluminum.

I recently put together a short block and used a torque wrench on about every thing I would consider critical. But items such as tranny to block, intake, starter, water pump, alternator brackets, motor mounts I didn't bother with. Oil sealing surfaces I did and of course the TTY stuff.

It happens from time to time, people do make mistakes. It doesn't happen enough for me to think that it's time "to do something" to keep V6 people out of the V8 forum though. There are some that are versed in both worlds.

Your first mistake in the SHO world, whether V6 or V8, is revering the words of others that have been here longer like the writing of God. They're human and they make mistakes too, just like the V6 people.

Always read up on a subject and get multiple opinions from multiple people or find multiple topics posted by different people. When you have multiple answers that end up the same or similar THEN you know you're probably onto something.

Actually, thats what i did whenever i reinstalled my intake as well as valve covers... Got the wrench out and tightened them until they felt "good." I reinstalled my intake well over 20 times when i had it and i had zero issues doing it this way...
