If you're going to replace your fuel pump while you're in there I would suggest replacing the fuel return line check valve. It's the tapered rubber looking thing at the end of the return line in the tank. I replaced my pump last summer and now I gotta drop the tank again and replace this thing.

Wow this isn't really looking good now. . .
What other symptoms would point to a bad fuelpump? Doc, I want a second opinion!

I'm in Ann Arbor at UofM. SHOs running ok, as usual if I don't hit the gas right off of idle I'm ok.
No CE light still.

If I was you I would take the cat off and check for sand. Even if it cost you $30 at a Midas. That can **** your engine worse than just about anything if it gets sucked back into it.

Alright do a little experiment. Take a really deep breath and blow it out. What do you do after you blow it out? You breath and take in some air. Its not the best analogy, but its similar to what the engine does when the revs come down.

When the throttle closes, the motor is under vacuum. This means that anything after the exhaust valves is fair game to get sucked back into the combustion chamber and tear up cylinder walls as well as cause other problems.
This is also why you will lose torque without cats. The cats provide necessary backpressure; without them, there is too much reversion (the flow of burned exhaust gasses back into the motor) and the motor suffers from lack of low end torque.

I just did a fuel pump; this rubber ****** doesn't seem to serve any purpose as a valve. We speculated at the time that it was there to prevent the fuel from foaming as it comes back to the tank. Why would it need replacing? I have heard of people who didn't even re-use theirs.

AHHHHHHHHH!!
I was getting some parts at my local Ford dealer, when I was leaving, I went to start my car and it did the weirdest thing ever! Immediately after it started the car started choking, literally, the rpms jumped up to about 2K then dropped to 1K then fell to about 500 then stalled. I was trying to give it gas and there was no response. There was this awful sound too, it was like growling and crunching

Did it once again, then the third time after a harsh start it went back to normal.. . .
Is that the bad cats then?? I still don't understand how sand could get back into the engine, in an EGR equipped vehicle I can see it, but not without it. As a precaution I'm cutting the cats asap, but anyone else had this happen? Bad cats for sure? I'm thinking so

Ian (manyshos), I'm not sure if having the rubber check valve is absolutly necessary or not. I figured it's there for a reason but I'm no hydroengineer. However I've been having hard start problems while engine is warm and did the normal trouble shooting & was advised by sdpatt that this valve is a common culprit. Now I've got to go back into the tank to get this thing after I replaced the pump last summer. So since it's only an $8 part I figured I'd try to save someone any extra work later if they're already going in there.
