Not bragging about money here. This car is why I am broke all the time and have to do everything on a budget one year at a time. I don't own a race car anymore and and can't afford to get started with that again. I had a 1971 Maverick Grabber that I bought new and drag raced it for years. I also spent many days and nights working on it to make it a street/strip car. It is one of the few cars that I have ever owned that I somewhat regret selling because of all the great small block Ford parts that are available today.

I don't race the Pantera because they suck as a drag car and it is only geared to run about 165 mph, but it can get there pretty quick. That only leaves me with the Hayabusa to play with, so are we talking about racing it against a full blown race car or something that is street legal? The popular thing these days seems to be doing 40 mph run offs with cars and sport bikes with someone filming it.

Racing Costs

I can't agree with you more about the cost of racing. That is why I quit doing it many years ago and went back to the having some safe fun on the street.

The Pantera only runs the way one should given the engine set up and stock gearing, so 165 mph on the top end is not much over a good stock one that will do a little over 150 mph. It is not fast by today's super car performance standards and not even close to today's new generation of sport motorcycles. As far as value, a Pantera is not a high dollar car compared to a good original muscle car, but I bought mine in 1977 when they were still resonable. I could not afford to buy it today even though they are in my opinion, under priced considering how rare they are. You also have to be a mechanic and an engineer to be able to drive one of these cars for any distance. Ford did not spend much time or money on the engineering of the car and it has a Lucas electrical system, which is also know as the "Prince of Darkness" for those of you out there that are too young to know about old British sports cars. It only took me 30 years to figure out the electrical system in the car and now have it working like a normal car. If anyone in the Pantera community finds out that I have said such true things about the car, I will never be able to go to a club event again. But since I also own a SHO, I know you guys won't tell on me.

I will have to find some of the pictures that I have of the Grabber and scan them into the computer. When we had the get together in Tucson a couple of years ago, there was a Grabber racing there. I think the guy that owned it got tired of me hanging around and looking at it. It sure brought back a lot of memories for the wife and I.

Lucas and I go way back, my first car was a 1977 Triumph Spitfire. That was the best car I ever pushed.

This is one of the few pictures I have of this car. It is a 1971 and had the factory 302 V8 with a three speed manual transmission on the floor. The photo was taken in 1972 and it was before I knew what a camera was.

To add insult to injury, I found out that the secondaries weren't even working either.... just dumping raw fuel into the exhaust/oil mix.
