...and probably Eric too, with his tasty track vids

Well, I recently got a second SHO

pics can be seen here

It was a beautiful well maintained car thanks to the second owner. Now it is a burnt work in progress thanks to the third owner and his stereo install. When I acquired the car there were two paths I was considering: back to original b/c the car was so nice and has a 3in 3 ring binder full of maintenance records and receipts from 33k mi to 170k mi, or make it a race car (which is why I was looking for a second SHO). Well due to the fact that the HVAC unit would need replacing b/c it is partially melted, along with the EATC and what appears to be mostly accessory wiring, I have decided to make it a race car. Plus I don’t need a second DD.

I will be starting slow and cheap. I will be making it as light as possible first (The interior is for sale here), stiffen it up a bit (SF connectors plus a few other tricks I will share if they are beneficial), then save up for the suspension. I will be joining SCCA having never “raced” before. Hopefully I will progress as the car does.

Let me know what you think.

Dang, That looks pretty good on the outside. How's the inside? If it's any good, I definitely wouldn't strip it down. There are plenty of trashed SHOs around for that.

Place an ad for anything you have for sale on the FORUM in the classifieds section.

Tom,
That link to the interior for sale is an ad on the forum :thumb:

Pics of the interior are here and in the ad.

So you think I should restore the car? Hmmm, then I could sell it and use the proceeds to make a race car out of something more dilapidated.

Strip it!!!

And I'd look at joining NASA long before looking at the SCCA, which doesn't even have a class for the SHO. NASA, especially our local one, has a progressive system where you can progress from DE1 (bring yer street car!) all the way up to the race group. The SCCA is race group only, with the exception of their autocross program which is quite good.

Seriously, the call as to whether to strip it or not is up to you. That car is creeping up on twenty years old, and if the dash damage is more than you want to fix, I think it's a fine candidate for a track car. The GenIs are lighter than GenIIs and will respond well to all the known mods.

It'd be a lot of fun to have another SHO on the track around here. When people point and laugh it won't always be at me...

Yeah, upon closer examination of the interior, I'd say strip it too.

I'll get on those DooleyBuilt mounts soon also. I just need to finish up some of these other projects first ( AKA cleaning up my yards).

Thats great info, just looked into it and NASA does look better for me. Plus, I can run my overweight silver car in DE until I get the black one sorted out.

Yeah its pretty scary under the dash, pics don't really capture it. I'm hoping the main harness and computer are still intact. Is the computer on a gen1 in the same place on a gen2? Maybe I will dig into it this weekend.

No rush, I will probably be waiting until summer to do my laundry list of maintenence to the silver car. I'll have more time then, and hopefully have the black car ready for some temp. transport while the silver car is under the knife. You can put me down for two sets though:naughty:

A couple of additional thoughts, then...

1. Don't eliminate the passenger seat and belts. When you're just starting with NASA they'll send you out with an instructor from time to time, and you need to be able to accomodate that. The stock seat and belts are the best way to do that. FWIW, I can't carry a passenger any more because a rule change means that the existing four-point harness can't be used with the stock seat. If the car still had the stock belts (it doesn't) I could still carry a passenger.

2. The first mod for the track (other than weight reduction, which never hurts), is a brake upgrade, especially if it still has the GenI brakes. Those 15" basket weaves gotta go to fit a decent brake kit under 'em (I'm not even sure whether they'll fit over a 96 upgrade)...

In any case, have fun with it! That looks like a cool project and I think has a lot of fun potential for a track car.

Sounds good. Are you building them for SHOBROS, or are you gonna teach them how to do it?

Me teach them? Hahaha that's a good one. Not building them for anybody yet, just you me, Nick and one other guy so far. SHOBROS did approach me and ask if I was interested in building them for SHOBROS to sell. I don't know if mine are good enough for SHOBROS though, they're pretty fussy about quality. We'll see.

did you win that off E-bay?!?! NissanChick had contact with that guy for awhile and was gonna fly out to cali and get it until she found the one over here without the repair bill. I'm so glad a forum member got it though... It's a clean car except for the fire damage.

1. If my interior sells I was going to put that money toward d&p racing seats. I was thinking about some corbeau recliners like the TRS. Any suggestions, should I get a fixed back seat?
2. I agree, maybe the black car will get the pbrs I have waiting for the silver car. Did anybody ever find out if the basket weaves are worth anything to scrap?

Yeah the third owner sold it on ebay. The fourth owner thought it would be a simple fix and when he realized what it was, he turned back to ebay to sell it. Thats when I saw the auction and bought it "locally". Boy it was a long lonely drive to Cali. and back with a trailer.

Anything that reclines won't pass race tech, when you get to that point, but if you just want something in the interim it shouldn't be a problem. Probably a good idea to be patient, and with some experience you'll have a better idea of what you'll really want in a race seat, anyway. So I'd suggest just putting something light and not too expensive in there for the time being. If you get something that has a hole/slot for a sub strap then you can get a proper harness once you get the cage in.

The downside of the stock belts is that they don't hold you in the seat very well. You can get a CG lock for the stock belts and/or get a seat that's deep enough that you don't slide around.

And last I heard around here people couldn't give the weaves away. Maybe leave them on a corner near ASU in the fall and some student will make furniture out of them.
