Hello all. Im looking at purchasing a 1993 Taurus SHO, the current owner tells me it needs a timing belt, I think the other snapped at speed, but am not sure.

What I am trying to find out is is the SHO motor an interfearance motor? Is it possible for a valve to come in contact with a piston on this motor or is there enough clearance for the valves to be fully open with the piston at TDC and have them miss each other?

The price on the car is good if all I have to do is replace the belt, but if theres a chance a valve and piston meet, Im not sure I want to get into it for that kind of money. Thanks for the info.

The SHO engine is not an interference engine.

Timing belts are under 50 bucks from www.rockauto.com

If you get the car, you might as well do the rest of the front end maintenance while you are replacing the timing belt. That includes the water pump, crank sensor, front main seal, etc.

Scott patterson occasionally posts his list of 60K parts. Use the SEARCH button and check back over the last month or 2.

FAQs are located at www.shotimes.com

Good luck!

Stock, the 89-95 V6 SHOs are a non-interference design. However, there are a few things that can contribute to it becoming an interference engine:

Stage 2 cams
Stage 1 cams + carbon buildup
something (like a valve shim) jammed in the valve, forcing it further than it would normally go.

FYI, the 96-99 V8 SHOs ARE an interference design.

Welcome, and best of luck with your SHO!

(How's that for positive thinking?) :)

Thanks guys. Just what I wanted to know... Not sure how this car is going to turn out at the moment, thinking of gettin it back on the road and letting the woman drive it for a while as her lease miles are up and the lease is still good till the end of the year, after that, see where it goes.

One more question... Do you think the timing chain can be changed while the engine is still in the vehicle, or do I need to remove the engine to accomplish this task? thanks again

SHes got a 2000 pick up on a 3 year 50K mile lease... which is due up in January, and she right now has 50,300 on the truck. Found this SHO, which Ive always wanted at an unbeatable price, if its clean and good going to get it and let her drive it till her lease is up on the truck so she can avoid paying $.13 a mile... then go from there...
