Guy's I need some help here. This car which I just bought has 220,000 miles and no records. It runs fine except for amiss and knocking below 1500 rpm in the top and frount of the motor.I pretty sure it;s not the rod bearing.I have the timing cover off and the belt is loose enoughto move it with your fingers on the gears,is this normal?Could the cam hve a wiped lobe and this be thecause of the knock?I am only used to working on push rod motors.I may just junk the car it is a green 93 atx. Thanks Jim

The belt is too loose. That alone can cause the knocking noise. However, there are additional things that can be making the noise, especially crank cancer.

My guess is that the automatic tensioner has crapped out and/or the belt has stretched.

Will a loose belt result in a loss of power. My 95ATX has been whining like a banshee for some time now, and it seems as if it has lost quite a bit of power. Has anyone else had a whining noise from their tensioner, I believe it is the bearings in one of the pulleys but I am unable to single out where the noise is coming from.

It can. If the camshaft timing is not correct as would be caused by a loose timing belt or crank pulley, the engine performance can degrade all the way to the point that the engine will not run.

The bearings in the tensioner pullies do indeed go bad. A mechanic's stethoscope will find it quickly.

Well, you are right, the belt tensioner has lost it's pressure,I can almost compress it wih my thumb. It was letting the tension pully rap on the block, what a racket it made.I also broke the surpentine belt tensioner trying to take it off the block. The pin that goes into the block was corroded into the block and broke clean off!rew these parts still available? Thanks for the replies,Jim Dow

What pin that goes into the block? Which sepertine belt tension broke? The front one doesn't have any pins that go into the block, it's held in place by 3 bolts. Are you talking about the part inside the tensioner bracket with the 5mm hex head?

The ATX and MTX drive belt(s) are arranged differently. I think he means the one with the 17mm bolt used for releasing tension on the serpentine belt. You'd be better off trying the WTB section. I'm sure someone has plenty of 3.2 parts leftover from engine swaps.
