Hey guys,
I purchased my 2010 SHO back on Feb 25th 2011. It had 22K miles on it and now has almost 26K miles.
The tires are Michelin All-season Primacy MXV4. They would still be good for another 10-15K miles, but for the track, they simply suck.
So, I was thinking to keep them for when I will sell the car in a few years and in the mean time, buy summer tires (or all-season, but new tires).
Here in Quebec, I will have to put winter tires from December to April due to cold and snow (that will be another expense to come as I want to buy 18'' mags and winter tires).
So, money is a bit of an issue, but performance also.
I shopped around on ebay, tirerack, etc., rad some reviews, but I wanted to hear from you guys, that drive the same car as me and from whom I respect the opinion.
I need to include shipping fees of about 160$ to ship to Canada... bad start!
Here are my choices for now (and really opened for suggestions) :
Yokohama Avid Envigor : all-season for about 1127$ shipped and tax included (tirerack).
XL Hankook Ventus V12 EVO K110 : summer for 832$ shipped and tax included (ebay).
I would like them to last at least two summers with good traction.
Which is one thing I am concerned... I never had summer tires... do they grip well the first summer and then, because of lower expected thread wear, the next summer they suck?
I don't want to have to spend a 1000$ every year on summer tires neither!
Anyway, the wise decision would be to buy all-season, for where I live, but at the same time (and many of you are like me for that:evilgrin:), I want to lower my 1/4 mile time and right now I have more car than tires.
Thanks for your help.
Steve:thankyou:

I'm not sure if there is a good medium here, if you want tires that will give fairly long tread wear and good traction in rain and snow, then I think you will have to give up on the idea that the tires will help at the track. If you want a good tire for the track, then you want a tire that's a fairly soft compound and that means not much with treadlife. Sorry, I don't have enough experience to recommend a tire at this point but I think you have to decide which is most important. Hope you find a good tire.

Just did some looking around at Tire Rack myself...first at least in my area, you can buy tires with mounting and balancing at prices at or below what Tire Rack charges..FYI. However, I was looking at the Firestone Wide Oval Indy 500 tires. It looks like you could get them shipped to you at under $800.00 for a set of 4. Since Firestone is now owned by Bridgestone, I have heard nothing but good things about both of those companies. I have personally had Bridgestones and was extremely pleased with them, and several friends had Firestones and were happy with them. Only downside to the Wide Oval is that they have no treadwear warranty, so I'm thinking they are probably a pretty soft compound and I'm betting you won't get a lot of miles out of them.

I would seriously look at Continental Extreme DW's.... That's what I'm running, & I have over 14K. Wearing great.... will last at least 30K and maybe more with frequent rotations.
TireRack rates this tire as one of the best Extreme Performance tires... Has 340 wear number. If you go down slightly in sizing, your SCT tuner can adjust tire RPMs to make ODO & Speedometer perfect.

I've heard good things about the Hankooks for summer tires. If there is a Costco near you, they charged me 11 dollars a tire for mounting, balancing, and nitrogen. The Conti's are also supposed to be amazing, but they are all seasons and not strictly summer tires.

NOT TRUE.... My DW's are SUMMER ONLY..... DWS are all-season.

THE DWS have a wear rating of 540.

My son has the Hankooks summer only tires on his Pontiac GTO... Likes .

I'm running 18"s on my custom wheels. But I always change everything.... I did this to lower unsprung weight. Cut a total of 60 lbs (15 lbs per wheel/tire).

If you want to use the exact size as stock, you will likely have to purchase a different brand. Noted the Hankooks are special order at TireRack, and the Firestones are on backorder.

That sucks, I'd love some Conti DW's for a summer set they seem to be getting top of the charts everywhere.

Thanks guys! I will continue my researches a bit and contact local dealers for ideas and will make a decision soon. I will definitely consider your input.

BTW, I went to the track tonight, it was cold, humid and front/side strong wind... Again, the grip was not very good, but surprisely, I had my best 60ft. with 1.94 sec. (finally under 2 seconds!) and E.T. of 13.07sec... Unfortunately, I don't know why, I can't find the damn slips anymore!!! I had a bunch of good runs and very consistent at 13.123, 13.127, 13.141,13.165, 13.170 with under 2 sec 60ft all the time. My max speed has been 107.26mph (under my 108.3 established two weeks ago when I had my best run at the time of 13.151 sec.).
Anyway, too bad for that slip, because I am convinced now to see the 12 seconds very soon with new tires and the Airaid CAI...
Can't wait!
Cheers!

Steve :woo-hoo:

I finally went with 245/45-20 Hankook V12 Evo K110 Tire for 832$US all included shipped to my home in Quebec Canada. I will have them installed to replace the used Michelin and I should receive my CAI from Airaid sometime next week... AND I'll go back to the track to see the results!
Thanks again all for your comments, I went for performance by choosing a summer tire, but kept the price low by choosing an affordable tire. Comments on the internet seemed good, I'll take my chances. For sure, it will beat my actual crappy tires! lol

Anyone have any suggestions to replace the 20" f1's? I have 13k on them and they need to be replaced in the next few thousand miles. I liked the tire but they are wearing way too fast. They can be summer only since I have snow tires, but I want better tread life.

For the price... the Hankook summer tires are a good choice. Know my son likes them on his GTO, and Steve seems to be happy with them based on his other thread.

Believe the Caddy CTS-V also comes with Goodyear F-1's, and they are getting even worse mileage than the SHO's out of them..... especially on the REAR!!!!!

I just found this thread....

Good choice! I have a set on the white '89, and have over 2K miles on them. I want them for the track this summer, but I needed more life than I would have gotten with the RS3s (had RS2s before, and loved 'em). What I have found thus far is that the V12s are EXCELLENT in the wet. Already have had a few instances where they were put to the test in the wet, and did great.

I put these on after taking delivery of my car. . .made it easily through the worst winter in the Midwest that I can recall in 35 years of driving.

I already have snow tires, so I am strictly looking for a summer tire. However if you feel they are a good tire overall I might pick up a set. How are they wearing for you? Any traction issues off the line or going around turns? How do they handle in wet weather?

A great and cheap summer tire is the Vredestein tires, the Dodge guys love them for their chargers/magnum/300's
275/40-20 are available now
245/45-20 are being made soon

I just checked those out the other day. Pretty heavy tire, about 38lbs in the 245/45/20. That would add 7lbs to the already heavy 62lb wheel/tire combo.
