I have a 94 atx and there is a light ticking sound around the intake. Is this common or should I worry

Very possibly your hydraulically operated cam chain lightener. Very annoying but not a real problem.

It is annoying. I get a lot of people around here that don't know what a sho is and then hear tick, tick, tick. Embarrassing. Not easily fixable?

You can try and find out where the sound is coming from by using a long screwdriver and putting the handle to your ear. Be careful near the pulleys, but see if you can find out where the ticking is coming from and let us know.

light ticking could be fuel injectors doing their job, or the cam chains slapping, or a piston rocking due to stuck rings, or a timing belt rattle from a bad idler, or several other things - in other words anywhere from insignificant to important to fix asap. you will need to narrow it down as suggested above to determine which of those it might be.

Hey guys. I looked into this a bit further and used the screwdriver to the ear method and was amazed at how well that works. I narrowed the ticking to the middle of the intake below the runners and it looks like fuel rail there. I have never had the intake off before but I do see wires so I'm assuming for the injectors? The ticking is almost dead in the middle. Didn't hear it so much on the valve covers if at all.

Sounds like those are the injectors, if you move the screw driver around, then you should be able hear each injector

Is there something I can do beside replacing or will it always have the faint tick?

How loud is it? The injector is working if it is making a ticking sound. Can you make a video/sound clip of the engine running if the ticking is that noticeable.

well, the injectors will tick but usually not real loud. the valves are in the same general area, and it is possible that you have a bad shim or just a loose valve that ticks.

does it do it all the time? or just when its cold? or just when its warm?

It does it all the time. It has since we got the car 3 years ago but I'm trying to make sure it will make the shocago trip from NY.
