THAT is a prime example of why Ford sales are down. There is a car that can generate some excitement. I went to a Ford dealer the other day and it was full of long faces and grumps like the Lincoln Mercury stores. I mean really if you are looking for a sedan from Ford, what do you have? Focus? Yawn...and when you wake up and open your eyes, they start bleeding. Fusion? Yawn...out dated v6, and the GT was canceled. Taurus? Double Yawn. They should call the New Taurus what it really is...a Crown Vic.

That GT-P 315 has 315 kilowatts of power which translates to something like 422.42hp!!!
Yeah, we are getting shafted here in the states. You would think that since Ford actually started here in THIS country that we would get the good toys!!!
Makes ya want to plan a trip down under just for the test drives!!!

Did anyone look at the $68,000(AUS) price tag? This works out to be(based on exchange rates as of 10/3/08) $52824.00. I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think Ford would sell many of these vehicles at that price. That was one of the problems when Pontiac brought in the GTO from Australia. They had to de-content alot from the Aus model, while still charging a much higher price than most vehicles it competed against. Ford looked hard at the Aus line-up and descided that the European models would offer a better match. Check out these links to get an idea of what we will be getting:

I think you will see some very entertaining vehicles that will greatly enhance the Blue Oval in the USA.

X500000 HOLY CRAP, BATMAN!!! We ARE getting shafted. I agree; the Ford sedan selection here sucks. That's why I still drive a SHO; it's the only sedan they ever made that's worth driving, IMHO, except for maybe the Marauder.

Those European rigs are sah-weet looking. Dang! A sedan like that would be a real head turner. Very nice lines, four doors, nice trim package; sure wish some of those were available over here... Dang... ****** me off...

I think they would sell fairly decent, think about the average SHO back in the 90's they cost 25-30 grand, the average mustang was around 15, today your average mustang is almost double that, double 25-30k the sho cost and you get about what that 2007 FPV costs. I think it will do fairly well, and get people pumped up a lot about ford performance again, and they would probably end up getting more people on the lots, therefore selling more vehicles.;)

Ford would have a hard time selling $40K SHOs let alone $60K ones.

What do you consider an average Mustang anyway?

I was selling Fords when the SHO came out. After the newness wore off, Ford was having to add rebates(and other dealer cash-backs) to get the price down where people would buy it. At the same time Mustang GTs were hard to keep in stock. What you found was the average SHO and Mustang GT net prices were very similar. I know that most folks here understand how the new vehicle pricing system works in the USA. There aren't too many people around that are going to pay more for a FORD 4dr than what you would pay for the "Fan Friendly" BMW M3!!!!

a gt coupe, I guess average would be a v6 coupe, but back in the day the gt's were around 15k. And I am not even talking fully about them selling a lot of them, but the fact that they have them will bring people in and get people pumped up about ford. Point being, who would have thought someone would spend 25-30 grand on a taurus when a mustang gt was 15? We are getting back inot the horsepower wars, and I think a car like that would do the company well (as far as selling it, and getting people into the dealerships), and that's just my opinion.

This being said as Ford can't think of keeping a special edition mustang on the showroom floor no matter what the markup is.

I recall seeing ford GTs going for damn near $200k, and dealers were having a hard time keeping them in stock. Then take a look at the GT500....$50k and they're still rolling off the floor like escorts in winter. Not to mention when the last Cobra R came out....the Y2K R....sexy lil beast. 300 made....list price was around $60k, but I'll be damned if a dealership sold one for less than $100k.

Make this a limited edition car, federalize it, bring it over and give us some fun, Ford....I promise...even for $60k after dealer markup, they won't stay on the dealer lot for longer than a week.

My point was that this vehicle would have to compete against other vehicles with greater heritage/image than a new player at a higher price. What you see with the special edition vehicles (such as the Ford GT), or limited run production-based vehicles(such as the GT500) is how powerful the want to be "one of the first" can be. The GT500s are currently sitting on dealer lots and Ford is trying to market the remaining Ford GT's in Europe(they won't meet the 2008 fed standards). Look at what happened to Pontiac with the GTO or Dodge with the Magnum. Both were good vehicles that the market would'nt, or could'nt, support long-term. Ford doesn't need vehicles that they can sell a few thousand. They need vehicles that will sell in much greater numbers(like the original Taurus). And then, and only then, can special vehicles (like the SHO) come to market. You see this in Europe with Ford's line-up and, I hope, we will see the same when they start coming in 2010.

For 50 grand , it would be a damn hard choice to choose between that 420hp grocery getter (sexiest thing ever) and a GT500 (winter? yea good luck) .

Fomoco needs the balls to grab that Falcon chassis and make awesome cars again like over there.

If this is true....Please explain the GTP? Where do you think most SHO owners that bought their car new went? GM sold a lot of those cars. If that example doesn't work...how about the Maxima? SHO performance is the ONLY choice, and Nissan has built a market around that car that Ford never attempted.

Additionally, the market used to be like you suggest, but times have changed. You cannot jump into a market all timid and hope that high sales allow you to make special additions later, because it won't happen, ala Fusion GT. You have to LEAD with your heavy hitter and get the good press that Grows the brand, label, and make to a higher status. Why can't Ford sell a 60K sedan? Why do we all think that? Because Ford is KNOWN for making crap and not BREEDING excitement into their cars. They are KNOWN for snoozers like the current line up. To ignore the enthusiast market is to ignore customers. In the current sales market you CANNOT ignore customers. That is why GM didn't just bring the G8, but they included the G8 GT, and the G8 GTP within one year of launch. The new CTS was introduced at the same time as the CTS-V. That is why Ford fails. Attitudes like, we will wait and see if we can add something special later.

I agree with you completely. Ford got so enamored with SUVs and Trucks that they put their car programs in neutral. The problem that Ford is dealing with is finding the right platform DNA to bring in and re-ignite the car platforms for the future. The trouble with the AUS platforms is the base models have been "JUNK".They have had to, almost, completely rebuild them for the performance models, very similarly to the US in the 60s and 70s. Remember what the Mustang was like before Shelby rebuilt it. This is why Holden has been completely destroying Ford in the local market. GM has redesigned their platforms with elements from their european and asian design studios. This is where the big cost and quality elements for the G8 have come as opposed to the GTO. If you look at the European Ford line-up you find the quality and performance aspects built in from the base models up. This is why the Ka, Fiesta, Focus, C-Max and Mondeo are such hits in Europe. They are fun, solid cars from the base models to the ST & RS models. It's great to have a high-dollar monster to play with the big boys, but it's more entertaining when you can share part of it when you drive the model that you really can afford.
