Hey everyone I am fairly new to the Gen III world...came on over from the Gen II's after I found one that needed it's cams fixed.... anyways the gas milage on this thing sucks...it's horid In town driving (which granted lowers things a bit) I average 12.5 MPG! Is that not a little on the low side, I mean I know it's an 8 but c'mon...When we were in there to do the cams we also replaced the plugs wires CPS, and Crank sensor and cleaned the intake butterflys..... I'm just wondering if there was somthing we missed or if there is something to up that MPG # a bit. I'm not easy on it but not hard either it's average shift point @ 2500 rpm

Ummm, I'd be a little concerned if you replaced plug wires on a V8 SHO since it doesn't have any. Also, the crank and cam sensors almost never fail, and are not considered a preventative maintenance item.

Did you replace the spark plugs? That's often the number 1 reason for decreased performance in the V8.

The V8 SHO has a coil-on-plug setup. The V6 has remote coils that are attached to the plugs via plug wires. On the V8 these coils sit directly on the plugs, eliminating the need for plug wires.

Yes this was a mistake I realized after I posted it... I did the 120K on my 95 right before I sold it so the wires were still in my head as they were a lil pricey from Ford. So no wires on the 96, but the plugs are new as are the other two sensors and the intake cleanup.... it just seems like that MPG is a lil on the low side...it runs perfactly

Well I didn't but they are autolite platnums (Couden't get the MC ones in time) they were installed at Rays Auto in Mi at the same time the cams were fixed

You can't stick any spark plug in without gapping them first!

No..meaning i personally didn't gap them.... hence I don't know what the gap was set at, but Ray has done more then 100 repairs on teh cam issue so I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

Even with the supercharger I think I have never seen worse then 13 on mine, of course I don't flog it for an entire tankfull either. Like they said already, plugs are the number one issue without getting a service light, that is provided it is working. The other thing to look at is a dragging brake (was not an issue on my SHO but my Lumina had it), tire pressure, alignment and oddly enough fuel filter (mine would be very inconsistent at delivering fuel resulting in loss of mileage). Last thing to check would be compression to make sure your not blowing it by the rings or valves.
That's my 2 cents.

I dont get much better MPG probably around 15 or so. I have replaced everything I can think of to try and improve my MPG with no luck. Now I have just accepted the fact that she like to drink a lot. If I could keep her running a little more often, hydration would be the last of my worries.

Worst mileage I ever got was around 12 and that was at Thunderhill this year. Over 100 miles on the track.

What gas are you using? That will make a diff. Also if you sit at long traffic lights that will make it go down as well. Change out the fuel filter on it and put some additives in it. That sould help, at least it got me an extra 2mpg.

Don't use additives. And don't use Shell gas. The additives are bad for your engine and WILL NOT give you better gas mileage, despite the crap they feed you in the commercials.

Use Mobile, Exxon, Texaco, whatever. Just not Getty or something cheap like that.

...or stop pinning the accelerator to the floor every chance you get!

Additives are bad for the engine, eh? Then why in the world would my own auto tech teacher (a master tech.) tell us they're good to use? When I say additives I'm talkin about the injector cleaner and fuel system something both made by STP. I've used both of them in the cars I've owned and in other peoples. No problems so far and non will arise that I can see.

So what is it exactly that cause so much harm? Please explian.

Fuel system cleaners and injector clean are not additives. They are system cleaners. Actual additives are put in gas for "cleaner emmissions" or "more gas mileage." They alter the properties of the fuel to burn differently. This can result in loss of power, poor burn, and clogged emmissions stuffs in a vehicle engine. If you want to get more technical about it, let me know another night. I'm spent.

I'm sorry it was misunderstanding, for some reason I was thinking they where additives instade of cleaners. But you are right in that additives screw things up. Sry about this, carry on.

No harm done. I'm in tech school too. I often screw things up. That's how I learn. And the guys never let me live it down.

And the guys also just never let me live down the fact that I own a Ford!!! :finger:

EDIT: someone else just called them additives. I guess they are b/c you add them to your tank, but I still think of additives as yucky uh-uh, poopoo
