when its that cold you lots of times need something in front of the radiator to allow the engine compartment to warm up enough to get the engine up to temp.

I would use a stock replacement thermostat.

That "insulation" is mostly for sound deadening. It's not going to make a very big difference with regards to your coolant temp.

Theromstats for SHO's can be hit/miss. Make sure it's not stuck open, that it cycles open/close with water on the stove, to be really sure!

Invest in the original Equip eventhough they cost way too much. SHO's operating below design temp stay in open loop control and get ****** milage.

the hood insulation has several purposes, none of which is related to the operating temperature of your engine.

the primary purpose is that of a fire suppression blanket - that is why it is held up by relatively few flimsy plastic clips - in the event of an engine fire the idea is that it melts the clips and that blanket falls down and smothers the fire. I know from experience that it is not particularly effective at this mission.....

the second purpose is to help keep down the temperature of the hood, so the paint lasts longer. it is slightly more effective at this mission than the first.

the third purpose is to reduce noise in the cabin.

So you're not getting any heat in the car either? Just because the needle doesn't move don't mean the engine is not up to temp. Radiator full, any heat inside car?

Hood insulation serves two purposes. Its primary purpose is to reduce the voice. The secondary one is to regulate temperature. I would request sho4life to fix the hood insulation. I am sure that it will solve the issue. If still he is having problems then he should seek the help of a mechanic.

"Hood insulation is to regulate temperature and reduce the voice"? maybe to keep the paint on the hood from cooking too? WTF is going on here.
I am sure you are not sure what we sure know what will solve the issues. Maybe he should hit Home Depot and get a roll of R-22 and wrap the whole engine bay.
He doesn't need a mechanic to change a thermostat, the guy strips cars all the time, he needs a heated garage to do the work.

Hood insulation being there or not is going to have very little if any affect on engine temp. Engine is NOT going to overheat or underheat because of the hood insulation status, unless some of it is actually in the cooling system or on the exhaust starting on fire, which would be a whole diff. issue.
