Hello all, I finally got my 3.2 engine home and plan to begin work on it for a potential 3.2 swap. I figured I'm the kind of person who asks 1000 questions, so instead of making a bunch of threads..... Anywho my first question is, how can I tell the difference between 3.0 and 3.2 heads?(off the engine with no valve cover?)

the left (front) head is different - the 3.2 has the bosses for the coil pack mounting oriented differently, and has a different boss on the water pump end for mounting the alternator. iirc, the right (rear) heads are identical.

So basically the heads are the same, save for the cams and exterior mounting?

Gots another question, can I use a 3.0 timing belt tensioner setup on a 3.2? And to my knowlege thats just the pulley that does the tensioning right? (I know the 3.2 had the pulley and a tensioner) Thanks!

Yes you can.

Think of the block as the same except for the displacement. So, just bolt up all the 3.0 accessories to it and you should be fine.

There are a TON of these threads around that have all these answers in them....

Edit: Here's some good ones:

I used this tread and it was a big help. I purchased the two taps needed to drill the engine lift and coil bracket mounting holes and the whole thing looks factory.
I transferred everything including the oil pump, pan, pickup and front accessories from the old motor to the 3.2.

:omgsho:

I plan to swap the heads from the 3.0 to the 3.2, so I don't think i'll have to drill or cut anything right?

If I remember correctly you need to use the heads that fits your accessories , I think theres a stud at one place where the other its not there or something , its been awhile....

Right on :salute:

Anyway theres no gain to use the 3.2 heads , they are identical (except for that stud I just posted).

From my understanding, the 3.2's timing setup is an idler pulley, a tensioner pulley, and a tensioner. With the 3.0 it's just the one pulley that does all the work right? (Thats what I understood from the FRM).

Ok I'm back at it! I was wondering which of these upper timing plates (or whatever they're called) would work for my 3.2 swap with 3.0 timing parts? Also will the bottom cover fit the 3.2? Thanks!

the water pump determines which plate to use, the pumps housings differ a bit.

So would I use a 3.2 pump or a 3.0 pump? I'm planning to run all 3.0 accessories, I don't know if that includes the water pump?

I'm not sure on that, its been a while since I've had the parts side-by-side for a direct comparison. With 3.0 accessories, it would seem a 3.0 pump would be logical.

Thats what I would think, I just need to know which one to clean up and paint
