What kind of shape are the timing chains and tensioners in? I know it's a long shot but they do sound really bad when they are worn out.

Jelloslug,

The timing chains look okay, it's kida hard to see excessive stretch when they're in the motor. The tensioners have very good rub strips on them.

The water pump is new.

In re-checking the valve shim, I even depressed the new shim into the bucket to make sure I was getting the true gap "as left" reading.

I'm going to try Bizzy's suggestion of disconnecting all the accessories and see if that gets rid of the knock. It would be a good time to pull the dampener off then and check for keyway damage.

Thanks for the suggestions guys and gals.

But I'm still getting that knock at all rpms from what sounds like #4 cylinder with the stethescope.
What if its an internal problem? I know that wristpin can go bad. I have seen one where it was almost small as a pencil and was to be big as my thumb.

Phil,

While I had the bottom end opened up, I put number four piston at TDC and then rotated the crank away from it. Reached up and tried to rotate and rock the rod to see if there was any free play. Couldn't feel any besides the normal rod/pin slip.

I'm still leaning towards that being the problem though.

All is good now. She has a new engine, well at least a 15,000 mile motor with new rod bearings. Started her up and NO KNOCK!!!!! Yeeeeeeehaw!

I'm a happy man. Jason, Chris, Eric, Mike, Mike, Aaron, Will, I'll be taking her out for some test drives tomorrow. Anyone that wants an E-Ticket ride is welcome to attend. Call me on my cell.

Why'd you put a new engine in? :) I'm still curious as to what was making the old one knock like that. Glad to hear the "new" engine is working great for you.

Tom,

Congrats on the "new" motor. A quick point in re. your concern about screwing up the computer by leaving the key "on". The computer is "hot wired". It receives battery power all the time, so leaving the key in the "on" position will not harm the computer. rangerj
