Loman Family File # 588367

The Loman family is one that seems to be like most middle class families but in this deep analysis by me, Doctor P.Tully, this family is far from normal. The family has two married parents, Willy Loman- a working sales man. Linda Loman a housewife and mother-two sons, Biff Loman, and Happy Loman. In my first analysis I asked more about how life is in the present time, I did not ask about the future because I did not know what the circumstances were. The family was recently together under the same roof; they had not been together for a while. The Sons have not lived at home for a while, Biff was traveling and working for a while, or so he tells his family this. This is a further look into the history of the family.
Willy Loman is a hard working sales man. Willy lives with his family in New York; he is a traveling salesman in the area of New England. Willy drives on a weekly basis to New England and often falls asleep on the ride; Willy has even been in a few car accidents due to this. Willy has always had a dream of being the best salesman but he does not want to upset his family by telling them he is a regular man, so he make up stories about how he is “known to every one”. Willy soon starts to suffer from depression, he is also having flashbacks about his brother that went into the jungle and came out a rich man. Willy also has many problems due to his relationship he had with his dad. Willy never knew his father well. His father was a flute maker and disappeared when Willy was young. Willy has also been trying to take his own life, I am not sure how long this has gone on, but ever since he was fired his symptoms have been worsened.
My prescription for Willy would be a heavy amount of anti depressants, also with a Family vacation. Willy needs to truly understand that being the best at work is not all that matters. All he wants is people and his family to like him, when in fact he family is proud of him and love him more than he could ever believe. The best solution would be for Willy to retire and move to the country where he could escape the city life that has corrupted him.
Linda Loman is a housewife and a mother to two boys, the oldest Biff and the younger Happy. Both sons are grown men. Linda is living in true denial. Even though she knows her husband is trying to take his own life but she does not confront him. She is caught in the middle of the family problems. At first she first comes off completely clueless about her husband’s problems, but it is shown that she knows that he makes little to no money a week and has to borrow it from his neighbor. Linda is always just putting problems away and not settling them, some would say Linda has too many skeletons in the closet.
Linda needs to have at least 12 hours of personal therapy a week, along with family therapy. I would also suggest a group were she can talk to people with similar problems so she can see that her family is not unusual. I would also send Linda to a full make over; she can use anything that would lift her spritis.
Biff Loman had very large shoes to wear. His father has many problems along with his mother. With all the problems in the family there is no wonder why Biff does the things he does. Biff is a kleptomaniac. When he is caught in a situation and does not know what to do he to steals things. This is not a recent problem he has, biff stole things such as a football when he was in high school. When Biff was at a job interview and realized he was never a sales-man for the company he got extremely nervous and stole a fountain pen. Biff has recently returned to home, after traveling a lot looking for work. In an argument with his mother he announced that when he was gone for 3 months without an address or phone number it was because he was in jail for trying to steal a suit. Biff is the only one in the family to understand they are living on lies. Biff is willing to try to help out with his family’s money problems, staying home and trying to find a job.
I strongly believe that Biff is the one in his family with the least problems. Biff should attend group therapy about his kleptomaniac problem. Biff could use a strong girl friend to talk to and live with. If Biff had a steady job with a girl friend that cared he would be able to sort out many problems he has.
Happy Loman is a young good-looking man. When I first meet him it seemed that any problem he had he could easily fix, I let his wit and good looks fool me. One of my 1st questions to Happy was how his love life was; I was not expecting to get such a long answer. Happy is a womanizer; he uses females as a sort of weapon. Happy Is having a hard time getting far in work, so he does what he is good at. He uses girls that are married or soon to be married to men that are higher on the payroll at work than he is. Happy did tell his brother that he is very lonely and would like a girl to just settle down, but he still fears a relationship. Happy is always putting problems off in his family, he strongly resembles his mother. Happy only wants to stay out of trouble and keep peace in his family.
There is no drug that Happy could be given because he does not suffer any real mental problems. There are only a few things Happy could use, one would be frequent counseling. If Happy had some one to talk to and sort things out he could really find him self. Happy is a little boy in a grownups body that is trying to find him self. Happy could also use some good time to him self away from the city life, NO girls, No family, and No distractions.
This whole family needs to have time when they are together and time when they are apart. Each action of a family member greatly reflects on one and other. This family needs to have time when each one can confront lies with out being interrupted. This family has a life based on lies. They need to move away from the city for awhile. Both boys need to find steady girlfriends. Willy and Linda both need to start going out to eat and taking vacations together, bringing love back to their relation ship. As a trained doctor I need to treat this family before some one hurts some one else or them self. I truly worry about Willy.
