the other day I was driving, and I rev'd the car well over 4000rpm in 2nd or something and the tach just went absolutely nuts bouncing all over. Now anytime I rev the car over 4k the tach goes berzerk.
I have no clue what could be wrong, I also get a check engine light too which I haven't had scanned yet. I'm thinking that's an o2 sensor, but I'm not sure about the tach

Probably the cam position sensor getting oil flung on it at higher RPMs due to a leaking rear cam seal.

I'm guessing that's expensive to change? I checked into 'em I guess 40$ ain't horrible, I'll try to get the code scanned later today it only comes on sometimes, and does shut back off

well I can't get the codes run from autozone because it's too old, they can only do 96 and up from what they tell me....

How do I tell if the cam position sensor is bad? and what else should I change at the same time if it is

If you are getting oil on the cam sensor, you will have to change out the oil seal. Not hard but time consuming trying to get the oil seal out. But the site I pasted in my previous post will tell you how. A good site.

it tells you how to replace the cam sensor which I'm relieved to know... but I didn't see anything about the oil seal.

I pulled the codes, got quite a few I should clear the computer but the main ones I got were 114 IAT out of range, 172 o2 (figured this one would come up) and 212 Tach erradic

the only thing that would cause the tach to jump like that is the cam sensor?

well after reviewing that tutorial or whatever you want to call it for the 60k and seeing where the cam position sensor is... I don't think it's the cam seals leaking causing the problem.
My power steering has been leaking for a while.... all over the place in fact, it looks like it's close and there is oil from the power steering all over that area. I would guess that would be the cause of it.
I will at some point do a lower 60k, but I can't afford it right now and I'll wait until funds are available to do so. I have enough fun ahead of me changing out the tranny AGAIN.

It's almost tempting though when I pull the transmission to pull the whole motor up and do that... I don't imagine it would be too difficult since I'm already supporting it.

Are these all current codes? IIRC the CEL will flash the current codes twice in succession, then there will be a pause and then it will flash the codes stored in memory. I would try clearing the codes, run the car a little and try reading the codes again just to make sure you're getting current information and not just a list of stored codes. Just my .02...
