For those of you who have done the upgrade, was it worth it?

Sync 3 w/ nav in my SHO was already a welcomed upgrade from my ST, and I can't say that I have any major complaints.. but I've never used the Apple Carplay either so I'm definitely curious about it.

If you have both which do you use more often for nav/music streaming/etc. ?

Apple CarPlay is way better than Sync 3, IMO. I don’t even use my Sync features now. I had a 2013 before and could not use CarPlay, so I was so excited when I got my 2017 and I would hate to go back to a vehicle that did not have it.

Me too I use the apple car play only now. I don’t have nav so google maps works for me. Pandora for my music still have Sirius Xm too. Siri reads and relays my texts. Calls whoever in the contacts list. Apple car play is good

I upgraded from SYNC2 to SYNC3 specifically for Carplay. I'm still waiting for iOS12 so I can more easily use Waze but phone calls and texts are much better.

One pet peeve is you cannot access the SYNC nav while using carplay.

Do I understand correctly that you have to plug the iPhone in for CarPlay to work? (That kills it for me...unless on a longer trip)

Yes sir you do have to plug it in. I set mine in the cup holder closes to me don’t even know it’s there. Cord runs from the USB port all black don’t see that really either. Especially for long trips I don’t like my phone in my pocket when I’m in the car. I thought you would have it Matt in your car being an 18.

If you lift the the applique that the trunk button sits in in the rear with the center console open the cable can be routed underneath neatly.

I use android auto daily for commuting to try and miss as much traffic as I can. Has saved me lots. Travel link does not update as fast as google. Navigation via google is a lot smoother too.

Yeah I only use like 7-8 inches of the usb chord and ran neatly along the side of the center console and then it goes right in the cup holder and the phone sits upright. I like things tidy and that works for me.

I prefer to keep my phone plugged in all the one anyway.

However, even if it’s annoying at times, CarPlay works so much smoother with Siri, it’s totally worth it.

Yes, my 18 has it...I tried it a couple times. I have my music on a thumb drive and the phone connects with Bluetooth when I get in the car...so I don't even think about plugging it in. I was hoping that the iPod Touch I had would work like CarPlay...but it's doesn't..

What version are you on? If you’re at iOS 11.3.1 or lower, you can jailbreak and run Waze now on carbridge. You can run any other app too. I use it all the time. There is a bug the makes the gps speedometer reading 10 mph high on some devices but I just turn off the speed readout in Waze. It navigates fine.

Ford locks you out of Sync nav. It’s really irritating. It’s not CarPlay doing it. I have a Kenwood nav unit in my truck and I can use CarPlay nav or the Kenwood Garmin nav. They can run at the same time if you want.

On a similar note, you can run google maps and waze at the same time with android auto.

My Sync2 can play iPhone music over Bluetooth and Siri also works. For me personally, this is fine.

I could do that too but carplay is a much smoother experience. It also works much better with navigation running on your phone and music from another source.

Also the new style USB hub has a higher power output. If I wasn't using my phone it would charge fine but using waze with SYNC2 it would not charge fast enough and actually drain the battery. New style will still charge the phone while using waze and playing music.

Can the new USB hub be used with a Sync2 system? I would love to be able to plug my iphone into the system instead of streaming over bluetooth. I would also see the id3 track info in the right instrument cluster.

I have no idea. I believe the old style will work with SYNC3 but not carplay but I swapped mine at the same time so no firsthand experience. I think 2016s which are SYNC3 had the old style hub. If you have SYNC2 with navigation you need the old style since the new ones don't have the SD card slot for maps.

It is doubtful, but give it a try. I personally hate cables and like the BT option.
