that car belongs to Mike Nelson- same red gen 1 in car and driver. and the other car your thinking of with that setup is Dave Kegels old car.

i think the hotrod look comes from it not having a console, like a lot of the old stick shift cars that just sprouted shifters out of the tranny tunnels (or in the SHO's case, rodshifter/exhaust tunnel) it suits that car.

i'm kinda split with this, i like the look, but the loss of the center console would seriously blow. i might try just taking the console out for a week or so and see how it feels, plus i'm sure theres a ton of crap under there, there was on my DD, so it could use the cleaning.

Yep, stock shifter without the console.

Not quite...

That's a rod shifter, which didn't come on any 1989s.

/nitpick

Did he have a custom carpet made? The stock carpet is sliced up where the brackets for the console come through.

i'm thinking carpet from a regular gen 2 taurus with a "bench" seat, it has a carpet like that. i found a pic of my friends old taurus and the carpet would just need a hole cut for the shifter perfect fit. answered my own question

be wary of cheap carpet you get what you pay for. if you can afford to spend a little money on some good after market carpet go that route if it is molded all you will have to do is trim it to fit and cut out your holes for the seats and the shifter. but make sure that you use carpet from a car with out the center console (as molded carpet for your application will more than likely have the same split that your current carpet has in it and that would not be good)

That's what I was trying to say. All aftermarket replacement Taurus carpets need to be trimmed to fit, holes for seats and all, including the split for the console. And yeah, the good molded ones are like this too.
