SubWoofer Blown

My subwoofer is blown on my 93 ATX. Does anyone know what a good replacement would be. I called for and just guess the price of the stock subwoofer. $$$$857.00!!!!! for a 6 inch Sub. Can you belive that. So, if anyone knows what a good one would be, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

But, to answer your question, if you still want to go with the stock one, more then likly you can find one on ebay for pretty cheap. It would also be a lot eaiser then trying to add your own custom unit.

Damn, I wish I would have not purposely destroyed my sub when I changed out my system. I could have made some money on it apparently.

You'll need an amp and you'll probably want to upgrade to the JBL system if you want the factory sub. Keep in mind that there are inexpensive options for subwoofers if all you really want is a little extra punch. One 10" and a decent amp won't cost an arm and a leg, and will outperform the 6.5" driver in the JBL system any day of the week.

I know a lot of SHOwners have replaced their blown factory JBL subs with Pioneer, JL, etc. 6.5" drivers and are happy with them.

I tried the $25 Pioneer sub (that others had recommended to me) in my car and wasn't satisfied with it; felt the sound out of the stock JBL sub was better. FYI, the JBL sub is 6-ohm, and this particular replacement is 8-ohm.

I have the Pioneer sub that I mentioned before sitting in my garage. I also have an extra working used stock JBL sub in my garage. I'm not offering these for sale (as that would be against SHO Forum rules) but I'd be willing to help you out. Email me for more info.

If you do decide to buy a used stock JBL sub, be cautious that many of these have been on the road thumping along for 8 to 12 years and are probably on their last legs. You could easily buy one that "works" but won't last long.

I think you got it backwards, Steve.

The JBL is 8 ohm while most replacements will either be 6 or 4 ohm.

Stock amp, I personally would go with a 4ohm. Yes it will put more stress on the amp(run hotter), but it should run fine. If you try this due to my advice and burn it up, I will give you my amp(one time offer). JBL has a nice 150watt rms amp that I am using. It is very small and I run it at 2 ohms(amp is stable down to 1ohm). I bought a 8" DVC 4ohms sub and run the coils in parallel.

OR, buy the subwoofer that fits a 94 explorer limited. Surprise surprise, it's the same speaker!! and I believe I paid 50 bucks for a new factory sub, works great!
There was a minor difference, as the explorer sub has an extra grile on the speaker to protect it from flying object in the cargo area of the explorer. But the bolt holes and wire connections are the same.

JL 6W0 6.5 inch sub is the way to go in my opinion. I replcaed my factory JBL unit with the JL unit in the factory box and it sounds pretty good. I also replace the factory amp with an MTX 150watt RMS amp. The sub is a 4 ohm unit. Any questions, let me know.

If they are saying 857 dollars, why not just go with a better component system all together??? go with the Type R components, or even a system called focus...they make the best components around...so think about that if you are gonna spend money... thumbs_u

How decent is the single 6.5" open air sub that can be placed in the opening? My thump thump is pretty good but doesn't make my head shake or ears pop. I've got a bandpass box with 2 12" polk subs powered by an alpine 300 watt x 1 RMS @4ohm amp. I run my speakers in parallel so I'm running 300 x 2 @2ohms. My system sounds like shiyat without the box, but it weighs atleast 70lbs. If I could drop the box in favor of a decent 6.5" open air sub that would be mighty cool. I've got a fat 2nd gen as it is and I'm no lightweight myself
