is the sub in our car just a regular speaker? i could have sworn reading somehwere that it was a 6'' speaker and it was the box that gave it its thump

erm, no....it's actually a 6" subwoofer.


a subwoofer is defined by the frequency range it operates at. a 6.5" door speaker's gonna operate (theoretically) at a freq range of 20-20,000hz, depending on many factors. a sub bass driver (subwoofer) operates normally at 20-150hz. What seperates that puny lil turd in the stock SHO box from a door speaker is the design of the woofer cone, the voice coil and basket structure. Sure, a 6.5" door speaker'll reproduce sub bass frequencies in an enclosure, a 6" subwoofer's gonna reproduce em a helluva lot better.

So to answer your question, no...it's actually a subwoofer.
