Here goes...

My 89 has manual controls. Temp control works just fine, but what controls the swing from defrost to floor?? Is that part of the Blend door, or is it something else. It's stuck on defrost right now, and I'd really like to at least get it to vent for airflow.

yeah, that's the blend door. There are myriad vacuum lines that relay the **** position to the blend door actuator (BDA), so if one of those fell off or cracked/crumbled, that could be the culprit, but likely it's tear-the-dash-apart time. Sorry. :frown:

The blend door actuator problem is limited to the automatic climate systems.

Your temperature door is manually operated via a metal rod run between it and the back of your temperature dial. If this rod is bent or an end connector is broken you'll be stuck at one temperature setting but should still have full control of defrost/vent/feet.

On manual cars vacuum is used to switch between defrost/vent/feet. Did it go out suddenly or has it been a problem that has been getting worse? Have you taken the dash off recently, or done work near the firewall? A vacuum line could have been knocked free either way.

If you take off the face of your dash you can get a look at the back of the selector control. Unbolt the control set (the three knobs) and make sure the weird plastic connector with the hoses is seated well. If it is, pull it free and start the car. One of those lines should be making a sucking noise now. If not, your vacuum source line is leaking. If it is your problem is either at the selector **** itself, one of the lines running from it, or at the doohickey in the dash that actually shuffles the air up, forward or down.

(Yes doohickey is a technical term. It means that one dirty box you don't have to futz with a lot :) )

I spend all this time trying to meticulously craft a response and some sniper comes shooting in from the middle of the desert! :)

Two questions:

1) What does one of those weigh?

2) What is the max payload of a Super Duty?

I occasionally have some traffic "issues" out here that could use that kind of encouragement.

Goes out to car to look for broken vacuum lines.

Russ mine is the same way, only blows defrost, but the temp works.

Alright, all lines around that vacuum log on the drivers firewall look ok. What is my next plan of attack. I get nothing unless I switch it to off, and then it is off. Otherwise blows only defrost as I said earlier.

Bump? What do I need to look for behind the dash. Have yet to pull it off.

Man I wish the AC worked, it was like 90 today on my trip home (130 miles).

Ok, pulled the *** set out of the dash. Everything looked like it was connected. No holes or cracks in the tubing. All the hoses look fine along the firewall. WTF. Stupid car.

Both rear windows now work though, thanks hawkeye!

Sorry I can't help you more on the A/C. Beyond the vacuum lines, there isn't much I can tell you, except that cracks may not be visible and/or in an area you can see. The best way to test them would be with a vacuum pump.

Or... the BDA shit the bed.

Sorry for the late reply...trace the black vac line from the firewall to the vacuum log. mine was broken behind the intake. If you can bring it by I can pinpoint it in about 2.5

Back from the dead.

Pulled vacuum lines off near firewall in the engine compartment. They have vacuum (hissing) going into the interior. Pull the connector off the back of the Selector/Temp/Fan set up, no vacuum hiss heard.

From what I can gather, I have a leak (inaudible) between the firewall and my manual temp control on the 89. Is there another "log" under the dash somewhere before it gets into the controller?

I can also manually change (reaching through glove box compartment) the vacuum canister for the defrost/vent and get air to blow back through the vents, but as soon as it is released it defaults to the defrost.
