Anyone ever use the spring compressors that Auto Zone sells? I was just looking online and I was actually surprised to find one so cheap ($50). I just had a strut bearing replaced at a shop and I couldn't stand watching the mechanic pull my strut and handle it like it was a piece of junk. I only go to a shop when it requires tools I don't have or bad weather which in Ma is pretty bad now. I need to replace the other strut bearing after hitting yet another pothole and blowing out another tire. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with these. Thanks.

You've got a couple options, but I would suggest against buying the one from AZ. At least the ones I've seen there.

-They do 'rent' them out for just a deposit, and usually with a full refund.

Myself, I work at a GM dealership, and we've got a bench/wall mount one that is still scary to use, but a **** of a lot better that the ones at AZ.

I have used them though, you just have to pay damned close attention to what you're doing and BE CAREFUL when it's compressed.

Just make sure they are opposite of each other on the spring. And actually I was suprised to see they at least had a pin in the ends of it to hold the spring in place. Same looking thing Sears sells as craftsman.

Cut a coil, then you won't need em.. lol

I bought this one from Harborfreight....

Works great and is constructed surprisingly well. I believe the directions on assembly were incorrect though. If you do purchase this one, make sure the rear bolts are loose enough that the jaws open and close with ease. Mine did not at first which cause the jaws to bind and close unevenly on the spring.

Hope this helps.

Watch your face and your body when you use single sided compressors. They really aren't safe in my opinion.
