When I purchased the car ( the pedal was on the floor and it was very hard to get into first. and 5th gear grinded slightly.

I had the clutch replaced the next day after purchasing the car and the fluid was drained from the tranny. The fluid was a brown color (which I beleive was Ford synthetic MTL). The clutch has been replaced twice previously (I have all the service records from the Dealer). I had the 5th gear blocking ring replaced and filled with Redline D4 ATF. It shifted great for a while but now (700 miles since clutch change) it seems a little difficult to get into first again especially if I am in neutral at a red light and then try to put it into first when the light changes. Kinda' tough. Also notchy.

Any ideas?? Should I try some different fluid or anything? This car has 130K on it.

I am comparing to my old 94 MTX which seemed a whole lot better but only 78K on it.

Thanks for the help always!

It could be your sychronizer for first, does it do it more when the car is warm or just when stopped and getting ready to move again?

Whenever I have this problem and only clicks in about halfway I have learned to slip the clutch out slowly while at the same time applying pressure to the shifter and right before the clutch engages the gear just pops in with no diffculty, same works for when reverse is hard to get in.

You stated that you changed out the 5th gear blocking ring, but never touched the synchro or blocking ring from the 1-2 area. IMHO there is your problem, while in there should have replaced those aswell.

Have you tried pulling up on the clutch pedal to remove any slack from the clutch cable as the new clutch wears in?

The tranny was inspected and they felt the 5th gear blocking ring needed replaced.

I think they felt because the clutch was toast it was hard to determine what exactly the tranny needed. Again a visual inspection was performed. A very reputable SHO shop looked at the tranny.

I have pulled up on the pedal and will again.

It seems to do it when it is warm.

Thanks for the help,
Scott

This car was serviced very regularly. This guy kept EVERY receipt even oil changes and kept a gas mileage log. Although we know he didn't change the MTX fluid only when clutch jobs were performed (and it didn't get all of it out)

He lived in Orlando and had alot of stop and go traffic.

sunny San Juan Bautista,
Check the tranny fluid level. It might be a little bit low. If it needs a top off you can try topping it off with some redline MTL instead of D4. Sometimes a blend can work better than one or the other.
