My two cars were the same way. My 94 had JBL, my wife's 95 had premium, and the same thing happened. Without a sub, I couldn't tell if there was a bass track or not, while my wife's car shook the crap out of the car.

One day, for gits 'n shiggles, I swapped the two amps. Voila! My car shook like crap! And my wife's didn't!

Basically, the JBL has a low-band crossover that it sends to the sub amp instead of the speakers, so the corner speakers don't get all that boomy bass that they're not good at handling (besides pounding the car, it sounded like absolute *****).

So, with the sub, the bass level is still a little less, but it is light-years clearer than the Premium sound produces. That's the JBL difference.

First off, SHOs (taurii in general) are acoustical marvels. They can make an otherwise decent sounding system sound beyond awesome. But here's the source of your cofusion...

Stock system was designed to make noise. It's highs aren't as crisp and it's lows aren't as deep as anything aftermarket (unless you're REAL low on the aftermarket food chain). It's a decent all around system, but for anyone with ears who's looking to get good sound, you're not really gonna get it with the stock setup. Granted, your lack of sub in the JBL equipped car definitely isn't helping, but even with the sub in, you wouldn't have earth-shattering, eardrum bursting bass. The reason why your 93 sounds so much better is, even though it's low end, the aftermarket head unit doesn't have the crossover levels the factory setup has. And chances are, even if it's a ************* deck, it's gonna be putting out more and cleaner power than the factory setup is. That cleaner power and lack of crossovers is certainly going to make a significant difference in sound quality.

oh, see, I didn't read where you had an aftermarket deck in the 93. That would kinda make a difference too.

Of course, in my 94 now resides a Pioneer HU, pioneer speakers in all corners, and an Alpine MRP-T350 pushing 2 JL 10W1s.

It shakes a little more than the stock system ever could.

Quoted for truth. I've never seen another car where inside, you will go deaf within minutes and lose bowel control, but outside, you won't hear a peep, not even barely with the windows down.

I'll be talking to somebody outside of my car with the windows up and nothing will be coming out of it... until I open my door, then it's kinda loud, and then they go "you got a stereo in thurr?" So I invite them into the car, and as soon as they get in they're like "OHHHHH MYYYY GOOOOOOD TUUUUUUUURN IT DOOOOOOOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" cos they just shit themselves from the bass. It's nice.

Until I have to clean the leather up.

What's really nice is that the trunk doesn't even rattle until it's so bassy inside that it starts interfering with your breathing. I love the audio in the taurus. It pwns all.
