So i removed the rubber boot for the steering (by the pedals) and the nut on the shaft looks like it might be loose and looks like 14mm size, but no socket or wrench will fit in there because it's such a tiny space. any ideas how to tighten? and is this the correct nut to even tighten?

also

also it seems loose because when you turn the steering a small amount (play) the nut doesnt move. but when you turn a lot the nut moves with the shaft...is this a good indicator that it's loose?

try harder.

yes.

I just tightened mine last week and this sound about right.

I had to turn the wheel a few degrees to the left to access the bolt, then really wrench on the bolt (don't snap it off!) since it didn't seem to move much...but it fixed the slop.

play

It turns out the 10mm bolt that you're supposed to tighten is 100% tight and there is still a decent amount of play when i try to turn right. think i need a new gearbox or something? also there is a kind of a rubbing noise when i try to turn right as well. struts seem to be fine when i push the car down and do the bounce test. also i have new rear tires and the car still kinda shakes going over 70. i need to fix this car so i can cruise down the highway!

You'll need to get someone to turn the wheel with the key on but the engine not running.

Just have them rock it back and forth so that you can inspect and watch for play. You'll find it.

kinda shakes or vibrates ? shakes look at tie rods/wheel bearings slight chance of rack. vibration you need to have the wheels balanced if you can find some one with a road force balancer use them its a litle more money but well worth it.it will actualy tell you where to put each wheel to get the best ride posible

.

that is not a good idea.
it puts too much torque on the slider portion of the steering shaft. that results in the slider deforming slightly, and that increases the play.
I'm speaking about the square slider with the nylon insert, under the dash.
