Ever since I got my 93 ATX in March it has had trouble starting from time to time shrug . It would always start, but it cranked over and over and over. Heres usually what happened, if I just got done driving it, or just started it it will start right up when I try to start it again, but if it sits for an hour or 2, up to about 3 hours it will crank about 10 times before firing. Now, when it sits beyond 3 hours it will start right up again. Here are parts that have been replaced (not due to, but could have possible cause) CPS, DIS,EGR valve, relay harness, New MOTOR, with intake and new parts (nothing from the old motor) Fuel Pump, And fuel filter. It seems to me that it would have to be ONE of those, especially the motor being replaced, but the problem is still there, so it is not motor related, and not likely fuel related with the filter, and pump (it always has fuel pressure) I pulled the codes, and there are no codes, nor running, or memory. I did the 60k to the motor before the install. Plain and simple I am stumped. I have mentioned this problem before with no one really having any knowlege of this problem. So if again, does anyone know who I coould contact, or where I could go to get knowlege of this problem? Thanks shrug

It sounds like the engine heat soak during shutdown after driving is causing the fuel to vaporize in the fuel rails. It would then take long cranking time to purge the vapor from the line through the injectors before the engine could once again start. After 3 hours of cooling off, the fuel has condensed back to liquid and will allow a normal start.

To determine if this is the mechanism causing your hard hot-starts, can you leave a fuel pressure gauge attached to the fuel rail and watch the pressure bleed off over time? If not, try cycling the ignition key to ON several times prior to cranking the engine. If this shortens your startup cranking time, you are suffering the loss of fuel line pressure after shutdown.

The maintaining of this pressure is the responsibility of the check valve that is integral to the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rails. One or the other is letting the fuel pressure bleed off and creating your problem. Maybe.

Scott....he said that the car starts fine if it has been warmed up...

I was about to ask the same question....I am having the exact same problem, although mine has only surfaced since I changed my T-stat yesterday....any ideas?

cold starts take alot of cranking, after warmed up, it fires right up...

I have the exact same problem and I don't know what to do about it. I think it's a fuel problem like Scott said. If it doesn't crank up right away, I just turn the ignition off and recrank it and it always fires up on the first spin of the starter. I have noticed more ATX owners speaking up about this problem, maybe a ATX related problem? It'd be nice for someone to figure out how to fix it!

I don't really know....mine never really did it like it did after I changed the T-stat yesterday....it seemed like it was flooded....but I didn't really touch anything except a hose that connects to the IAB and a removed a spark plug wire. I checked everything else...

It seems like my car is flooding when trying to start it...I have a good battery, new starter and altenator...

It will start if prime the fuel system, so it must be pressure related... How would I track where its leaking pessure? Its not from anywere on the motor, it has to be in the lines somewhere?
