OK I'm lost. Does the tooth thing make any diff on the longevity of an ATX starter?

With one turn of the starter the flywheel/flex plate will move either 10 or 12 teeth.

There would be a higher torque load on the 12 tooth starter.

OK I won't chase that idea as to the cause of 8 month starters.

the 10 teeth or 12 teeth thing still gets me. for now however i'm using the starter out of my sable. it's a factory starter for a 3.0 and does just fine. bolted in fine and starts just as good as the rebuilt SHO starter that was in it.

Autozone also sells just the s-e-l-i-n .....ah F-it.....that little thingy on the side of the big thingy!

$40 and change, and no starter removal (I think?). I had mine off, but it looked like you could do it while it was still installed. It's just two Torx bolts that hold it on.

IF the two starter windings are equal, then the 12 tooth one would have a shorter life. IF the windings are different then I would guess there is no difference in wear.

You would need to see the amp draw of the starter and then judge between the two. But more power delivered will mean more power throughput and maybe more wear. I doubt if the OEM starters though would only last 8 months. Sounds like ****** rebuilds but you really won't know until you analyze the failure of the starters.

My recommendation if you can find one is just get a 100% new WAI brand starter from your local auto electric shop.

It should run under $100, with no core charge, and should have a lifetime warranty. Ask for Lester #3230 or WAI # 2-1898-FD-1.

FWIW, all Gen 2 SHO's, regardless of whether they are MTX or ATX were spec'd for 12-tooth starters beginning some time in 1993, and all '94 and '95 cars should have had a 12-tooth starter from the factory. There was a TSB issued for long/slow cranking.
