Starter problem.

My SHO has started fine since the day I bought it. Until tonite. I was leaving work, it started just fine no signs of trouble or anything. I'm on a slight incline and take off, I stalled out. Tried to crank it over and all I get is a "BMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM" sound. Sounds like the starter it turning but nothing is happening. Starter stuck? Where's the starter located? I might try to tap it a few times. I need the SHO, it's my DD and I need to know what's wrong with it pretty quick. I can however clutch start it without a problem.

have u checked to c how many volts ur battery has????????????

ur starter is on the bottom side u have to get under the car, and its bolted to the engine and tranny................IIRC theyre all black with a silver tip

Sounds like the starter solenoid is not engaging the starter gear to the ring gear on the flywheel. Try tapping it, it's the small cylinder that the cables attach to. Probably best to drop in a rebuilt starter to avoid future problems.

It's about 10 degrees too. It's a bit sluggish starting when it's cold. I'm assume it's due to the temp. Is the starter mounted up front or in the back?

You know I do recall the starter making the same sound when I had a low battery. I may try to jump it with my Formula. It has a nice strong battery. I hope that's the problem. I'll let you know tonite.

the starters on the front side.........another possibility is ur alternator and or wires .........

starter would b by far the easiest fix tho........and from ur explanation thats what it sounds like is the prob..............IIRC take out 2 bolts, unhook the wires, then slide it out reverse to install the new

u could also try "bumping" the key a few times fairly quickly somtimes when a starter starts to go out u can get it to engage by doin that

I just remembered. Whenever it cranks the tach goes to around 800?? That mean anything?


Battery is putting out 12.76V.
I thought I had fried the solenoid. But I'm obviously getting power to the starter because I can hear it spinning. Just in case should I try to jump the solenoid?

both my 95 and 92 idle between 800-900.......on start up they both crank at around 1,500 tho.........

12V is normal for the car being off.........with mine runnin i average between 13.5 and 14.0V

just because u can hear it spinning dont mean that its not bad.............when my fiance's went out in her cavaliar u could hear it hittin and wantin to do somthin but, all it would do is spin.............

according to Advance (assuming this is for ur 91) starters cross for

FORD TAURUS 1986 - 1991

LINCOLN CONTINENTAL 1988

MERCURY SABLE 1986 - 1991

id say just find one at a junk yard and try it to c seems like thats the problem........if it was the wires or ALT. ur BATT. should b low.......around the 9-10V area at best........fairlly easy and straight forward job to.........

I don't know what the general consensus is, but if you're going to be replacing your starter, I'd purchase a new or rebuilt unit, or have yours rebuilt. I personally wouldn't want a JY starter. I had mine rebuilt a few months ago for ~$70. That's not to say a JY starter won't get the job done though if you're strapped for cash...

Buy the junkyard starter and have IT(and yours) rebuilt. Then you will have an extra starter on hand.

1,500 starter-rpm before the engine starts? Are these ATX or MTX SHOs?

I am curious what rpm-range other's see on their tach, as mine has always been 300-400 rpm ('95 MTX).

both my 95 and 92 idle between 800-900.......on start up they both crank at around 1,500 tho.........

Get one from Autozone or similar that has a walk-in lifetime warranty. They cost about the same as other choices.

I work at Advance. I picked up a new starter this morning. The old one had "FORD" on the bottom. I don't know if it was just an OEM or the original. When the shop took it out the pinion on the on the starter driveshaft was spinning free. You could also hear some internal parts rattling around. If it was the original it really hung in there. My crank RPM is around 3-400.





All is well.....for now.....
